Hi,
I need to buy a good UPS, any suggestions?
I found these brands so far: Apc, Powercom, Proline, Tripp Lite.
Proline is the cheapest per watt.

I have used the Cell Power (Powercom) as well as the Proline, and more recently UniQue LG UPS's - the Powercom lasted me about 5 years until the battery died, and a new one would have cost quite a bit - never had any issues with it.
I tried the Proline, but it lasted approx 3 months, then started giving hassles - got a voltage spike and it blew the UPS and the motherboard, so never tried them again.
When I replaced, I got some UniQue LG ones from my supplier - currently have my main PC (2x450w PSU's) connected to a ULG-1000vA unit, and 2x LCD screens, ADSL modem, speakers and laser printer connected to a ULG-700vA unit - keeps my PC on for approx. 20-60 minutes depending on what I'm doing - plenty of time to finish up and shut down.
Whilst at work the other day, the power went off at home for a total of 40 minutes and when I got home, the PC, modem etc. was still running... granted, the PC was idle - downloading some iso's, but still kept going.

I paid about R455 for the ULG-700 a number of months back and about R569 for the ULG-1000 more recently. I will be getting another ULG-1000 in the next month or so for my wife's PC...I may even get a few spare to power some lights and home essentials when the next power cut occurs!

Cheers

APC is quite good, look for one that's got power surge protection as well as battery backup.
Nowadays I don't buy UPSs a lot, if the battery dies, from old age :), just open it up, and put in another battery. Its the same ones used by electronics hobbyists, home security system, etc, small sealed leadacid type, go for about R80 each, then UPS good as new again...

Ups

Thanks Howardb, Ceebee
Where can get hold of a UniQue LG UPS?

Uhm, are you sure the reason it blew wasn't because of the laser printer? Those things can use a lot of current and most UPS's specifically state in the user manual never to connect a laser printer to the UPS. Although proline sucks big time so I'm not surprised (we got some proline screens and mice @ uni and almost none of the mice have their middle scroll button functionality anymore, just makes the screen jump round like crazy, and many of the monitors just die)

As for the topic at hand, I recommend APC, way back Cyberdyne used to sell them and we bought one (about 5 years back) and it's still running strong...

I got mine from Esquire in Midrand (Samrand offramp), but you need to be registered with them as a dealer.

Hi Gnome - I only bought the laser after I had the Proline blow up, so it didn't blow from this - never saw anything mentioned in the manual re connecting a laser, but will unplug it just to be safe... many thanks for this info!

What is your association with them? One post, and a punt and link for this company?? Suspicious. Spam?

ULG 1000VA seems quite nice, I got 3 Blazer 800VA at home, got it for like R430 each, Opened one up and components inside seems quite decent, even the Chinese battery is from a big reputable brand. Tried on a Celeron 420, 512MB DDR2, Onboard VGA, Sound, LAN, Single CD-ROM single PATA HD with a 17' CRT. Got like 25 minutes before one UPS reports battery low and I decided to switch off. Quite good I must say. But supplier is rubbish and now they don't have that model anymore.

My Powercom is nice and I LOVE the software, have 2 cheap chinese ones for two PCs but they not that nice and one Sahara one which doesnt last as long as I think a 600VA should, but at least the software is decent...
