Evening everyone...

Im currently looking for a laptop to use at varsity...
Uses will be...
  • Simple Solidworks design... no renderings or complex/part full assemblies... main work will be done on my sig, this is just for in a pinch
  • Office
  • Movies and music for when im bored
  • Digital textbooks
  • Matlab/Mathematica/Maple
  • The odd simple game, a la css/mw2/nfs/trackmania
  • Browsing
Now I was thinking along the lines of i3, possibly an i5, but i feel its unnecessary as the majority of work will be done on my sig...
About 4GB ram?
Budget around 5k-6k
Any good ideas?

I would have to recommend you this one:

Acer Aspire 5750G 15.6" Notebook Computer (AS5750G-244G50MN) - Black - R 6,059.96

Reason being is that it fulfills all your requirements, especially the graphics part. I couldn't find a better one for the price.

Edit: Here is the same laptop, but a slightly different model, this one seems to come with USB 3.0:
(Superior model)
LX.RAZ02.074 - ACER Aspire AS5750G-2414G50MN 15.6" WXGA CineCrystal LED Back-Lit - Core i5 2410M - R 5,976.01

^^^Go for this one instead^^^

Thanks

I was actually looking at that very one, but am a bit hesitant as ive heard acer doesnt exactly have the best track record with support, but I dont really have too much of a choice otherwise

Game and Makro has a special on the compaq now for R3k

Not sure which specific one you are referring to but so far from the ones that I have seen, they don't even come close specs wise to the Acer Aspire 5750G.

The following seem like worthy options:

Toshiba Notebook C660-238 at Game for R5499:

Intel core i5 2410M 2.9GHz
3GB Memory
500GB Hard Drive
15.6inch screen
Windows 7 Home Basic
1 year warranty

Lenovo Notebook G560 at Makro for R4299:

Intel Core i3 370M 2.4GHz
2GB Memory
320GB Hard Drive
15.6inch screen
Windows 7 Home Basic
3 year warranty

You could easily buy another 2GB ram stick for R200+-

Personally I look for price then warranty then specs, so I would go for the Lenovo one. The graphics on both of these are obviously lacking compared to the Acer Aspire 5750G, they most likely use onboard graphics which means no mw2 or any decent game for that matter.
