(turns this into a rant)

You know what pisses me off? When people advertise jobs with the salary listed as "negotiable". I mean, come on, that is just ridiculous. At least throw out a ballpark figure, I am not applying for a job to haggle about my wage based on previous employment. It's like walking in to a store to buy a beer, only there is no price on it, and when asking the store owner, they say "well, it's negotiable; how much do you think you should pay for this beer? How much have you paid for beer in the past?"

Irritates the crap out of me.

Rant Over.

Yeah I have to agree with there Kasyx. I had an interview where they wouldnt give me a figure as to what there were willing to pay. So eventually they asked what I earned so I told them, and the offered me the exact same amount. Next job interview that asks, I'm doubling my salary if they dont offer a ball park!

Yeah.. when I see "negotiable", I know they either screwed the last admin for pay or wanna screw you.

negotiable = we'll pay the minimum we can get away with.

Remember during these type of negotiations, the first person to mention a number loses. So hang tough and keep your mouth shut.

+1. Show your cards. You're the one trying to sell your employment offer. No serious sys admin who knows his value will reply to an ad that effectively says "so little we're ashamed to publish a ballpark figure."

@Koffie: I think the issue is not everyone is experienced enough to know better. So they might go into something like this and potentially get less then they're worth.

Good analogy "so little we're ashamed to publish a ballpark figure." Hahaha.

That's exactly why I don't like it. They're hoping to catch a sucker willing to do big work for peanuts. How do I know? Been caught that way myself. That's why I say high-end techs are not likely to apply in droves.

Neg ???? Both the companies and the recruiters should stop wasting job seekers time with that .
One recruiting agency called me up the other day and ask me to email her my pay slip , guess what guys , she is still waiting. The key to this is stand your ground but do your research as awell and dont expect a fantastic salary if the market at that moment is not offering it.

Another thing is organisations HAVE THE MONEY. Dont sell yourselfs and your skills short. You gona do the work if you get employed so you might as well be paid for it and paid well !!!!

If "some" people can collect massive pay checks for doing a 1/4 of the work you do then why cant you.
The job market is a difficult one but if you want an "x" amount then stand by it.

Yeah I see my post wasn't very clear, I agree with you 100%. Was caught myself. Always great when you find out the client is paying 4x your rate + overtime, but your company expects you to work overtime for free and take 3/4 of the money for "admin fees". I'm sure lots of techs could give us some horror stories.

@the original poster: This is not to flame you, but just something that a lot of people feel out there when it comes to negotiable being stated without a ball park figure. :)
