That means you can buy a new engine or buy a recon. Don't even bother repairing.
Check yellow pages for the follow:
- Scrap yards
- Engine sellers
- Agents (ask for parts, then ask for price on recon and new)
Some scrap yards sell recon, many will sell you a used engine with no warranty.
Engine sellers usually provide some warranty.
Agents always provide warranty.
IMHO, if you get a engine from a scrap yard from a write-off that wasn't hit from the front, you don't need a warranty. So long as the car had FSH (full service history with the agents) before the crash and the engine has never been opened it is IMHO better than recon. Depending on the amount of KMs on the engine.
On Opels for example, I usually replace the engine and transmission (quick swap) instead of opening. That is on the cheaper models, because the engine + transmission is so cheap it is easier to swap than repair (and cheaper) and more reliable.
