I dont know if I am posting this in the right place, but here goes anyway.

I am looking for a real time counter where I can view the amount of bytes being used at any given time.(Up and download)
As it is now I can only see the figures the next day........and then it is to late. I want to be in a position where I can immediately disengage from a site if I see it is using up more bytes than I am prepared to"spend".

At present I am with a Telkom Closer plan with a 2 Gig cap,and I must really watch my consumption for it to last the whole month.

Does something like this exist, and is there a free version that I could download.
I am not a Computer boffin so please keep it simple.

Hope you guys can help
Cheers,
Etienne

Get bandwidth meter pro. It allows you to watch individual connections so you can see how much international and local you are using. Its also useful to check if route sentry is working.

How about some links to help the guy out!?

NetMeter works fine 4 me.

+1. Netmeter ROCKS, and it is very easy to use (and freeware). It will let you see exactly how much is being downloaded and uploaded at any point in time with a running graph that you can keep on top of other windows at the corner of your screen. It will also log totals (day, week, month), and make projections about how much you are likely to use (given history) for the next day, week, month... http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/

UPDATE: As a side note, you can choose which connections it monitors. If you are connecting to your router via network cable or wireless (as opposed to running your router in bridge mode with a dial-up connection created in Windows) - i.e. via your LAN, any file transfers within your LAN will also be picked up by Netmeter, so be careful with that counting towards your totals...

It's not free - 30 day trial.

I also used Netmeter on XP but doesn't seem to work on my Vista laptop :(. It is supposed to work on Vista.

Weird. Works 100% for me on Vista Business (SP1). Have you downloaded and installed the latest version? Are you using 32-bit or 64-bit Vista?

Vista Home Basic 32 bit without SP1. I've got version 1.1.3 which is the latest. Netmeter only seems to record the uploads and not the downloads:confused:.

Eish. Under options, what is the "Network interface to monitor" set to (mine is set to "All Interfaces (No Loopback, No Duplicates)? Have you tried a 'clean install' of Netmeter (uninstall it, make sure its directory is removed from "Program Files" and delete Netmeter from "C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming" (resets all your customisations, removes your log/history, etc.)?

What kind of net connection are you using?

Yeah, I'm also using all interfaces. I'm using Vodacom HSDPA.

Trying the clean install now.

Edit: still the same:(.

I need your help very much to looking for it about info; price;...

Thanks guys, I think I will give Netmeter a go.

Etienne.
Of all the ones I've looked at and tested (pirated, trial and free) I like Netlimiter 2 Monitor the best because it has the best laid out and most easily accessible history view. You can view your Internet, network and computer activity in realtime, or history by hour, day, month and year. It's a bit of a resource hog, but apart from that it's the one I keep going back to: www.netlimiter.com
The other one I use of Bandwidth Monitor. It's okay, I guess but I prefer Netlimiter www.bwmonitor.com/

Both are free.
