This is to Ismail91, You cant read but now you wanna post rude replies to me???

Please see below...

First I said this
Are there any companies out there that have really caught your eye and stuck in your mind because of excellent service and pricing when it comes to web development and hosting?

Than this...

Well, I am not looking for a site to be done for me. We are a Web Hosting Company and Web Dev Company and really just want to offer really good hosting prices. We have our own server in the USA, it just seems that everyone that offers, well not everyone but most companies use other local companies, who use other local companies... catch my drift.

Our rates are from R60-00 per 1G to R689-00 for 40G. In the above where users use others and so on, pricing gets quite high and was just wondering how these companies make money or do they just offer it as a service and not for profit?

Please share your thoughts on our pricing, sometimes I think it is too low and sometimes I think I should put it down.

Then you say this...

You such ask about hosting and design and you now what to build for people!!!!weird!!!!!!!

You are not lekker, and By the way, to your reply on cheap hosting that you use a free host.... WHO WANTS ADVERTISING SPOILING A R20k WEB DESIGN???

Wow, seems like I missed some questions. Here goes:

What do you have to study to become a web developer farling?
I studied a degree at the University of Pretoria - B.IT. It was a middleground between Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Science and Multimedia. Quite worth it, IMHO. It's better to understand the basics of development first before jumping into web development. Learning object orientation also makes your data-driven websites faster and more efficient.

There are so many clients who only want an online brochure - how do you sell them "something data-driven?
You'll need to have some convincing marketing skills. ;) Try and convince them that they need to update their own catalogue on a frequent basis and that a data-driven website would minimize any maintenance costs (getting you or someone else to update the content for them). That way, the initial investment in a proper data-driven website minimizes ongoing costs in the longer term.

The old adage in Afrikaans fits in here perfectly: "Goedkoop koop is duurkoop."

Online brochures are so Web 1.0. :D

Selling web site functionality gets easier when you have an idea of what the client wants. Does the client want a marketing tool (read "online brochure")? Then offer to collect customer data for emails/newsletters, or provide an online "Contact Me" form when a potential client finds something. Both are reasonably simple, and both could "require" a backend if done properly.

In essence, learn to speak the client's language, then appeal to the benefits that the functionality will provide to the business. What might also help is an alternate quote (a bit of work needed here), where one is static, and provides a pro-rata rate for static updates, and the other is an up-front cost for a dynamic site. I've done this successfully before. I've also found it helps to split up the work into groups - static site, back-end, dynamic front-end, etc. Give the client a choice - that helps to eliminate the paranoid "I'm being screwed" reflex.

I also want to approach the study aspect while I'm on a roll. ;) I've been developing for the interweb for 10 years - and I have no formal certification behind me (yet). I learned everything myself, using online material. I have a few reference books, but most of my walls are covered with free cheat-sheets available online, simply to jog my memory. used to joke that anybody could do my job - that still stands true, only now it is that much harder, due simply to the amount of knowledge required to keep up in this programming genre. I'm not knocking education (I did an advanced programming course before getting into this) - and indeed, it's the only way to get recognition without experience - but you can do this yourself. All it takes is an above-average IQ (kidding), and a passion for what you do.

[EDIT]
I really ought to blog more. These posts of mine are getting longer by the day. :p

I think degrees have a benefit beyond the information you soak up from the books - it teaches (for the most part) the dynamics of successful teamwork, proper time management and, above all, responsibility. No more spoon-feeding like in schooldays. I feel the life-skills I was taught in 'varsity is invaluable. And yes, potential clients feel a lot safer if they realize you have some form of formal education in your specific industry - I've experienced this myself. That's one reason we insist on listing qualifications on business cards at my company... :p

Website offer

Hi everyone..

I'm starting a company next year, and I was wondering if anyone here would like to make some extra cash?

We need a website design, so I don't mind if it's freelance or through your respective company.

Basically, there needs to be a flash version and html version (choice from loading screen)

We have an idea of how it needs to look, which i will divulge once I have an interested party :)

It needs about 5 tabs (abous us, contact us etc etc etc) and an awesome front page.
I am assuming you will need advanced flash skills, because the vision behind the website is quite intensive.

Budget range is approximately 6k.

If you are a website designer, or happen to know of one willing to work under that budget, please send me a PM :)

Thanks a lot!

Hi there if you are looking for a website please email me [email protected]. We work with flash and our price range is very reasonable.

Company name? Website? Non-free email address????

Har-har-har! It's pretty hard to take web designers serious if they don't have their own website to showcase skills yet...

*goes off and plans a personal portfolio website*

Hey Killove did you find a designer yet? Or this thread is going to become the next advertising thread :p

I charge 5k non refundable just for the proposal. My minimum price for a web presence is R15k.
