Hi Guys.

Which Wireless ADSL Routers would you recommend standard with excellent range.
I currently have an Asus WL520GU.

Budget is +-1k ...

I have in my head that something with the 3 aerials is better ... is that true, or just nonsense in my head?

This is one of the options I'm looking at:
http://www.netgear.co.uk/home/products/wirelessrouters/work-and-play/DGN2200.aspx

Also, maybe one of these:
http://www.pcmall.co.za/Product.aspx?SKU=DSL-2740U

Let me know what you guys recommend ... I've been out of the game for way too long to make a sound choice on my own :P

Regards

Itai

The two best that I've come across are the USB 3G Modem-compatible versions of the ones you mentioned above.

The Netgear DGN2200M and the D-Link DSL-2750U and they're much the same from what I've experienced.

Hi Itai,

I'd go for the D-Link - currently have the DSL-2650 (single aerial) and it's situated bang in the middle of my home giving v/good coverage anywhere on my property (approx. 360sq/m) both in and outside the house.

Not too sure about the 3 aerials vs single aerial - maybe more is better!

Never tried a Netgear, so unfortunately can't comment on that one.

I've got the DGN2000, which is just the older version I suppose of the 2200. Amazing range. Decent speeds coming from it too.

For the best range, the WiFi AP and client needs to support 802.11n.
For best speed, the WiFi AP needs to have multiple antennas with MIMO support. 3 Antennas would help if more than 1 client connects.

Usually I advise to stay away from Netgear ADSL modems, because they often don't have bridge/half-bridge modes, and sometimes cool options are hidden in their web interface.

My dad currently has a TP-Link WR841ND (WiFi AP) in the middle of his house, and then the neighbours on the opposite side of the street has a TP-Link WA730RE (repeater/range extender) in the middle of their house and they get a decent signal strength. So the distance is probably like 50m through 3 or more walls.

Btw, why would you want to pay R1100 for a D-Link DSL-2740U modem when you can get the D-Link DSL-2750U from Rebeltech for under R600 ! AFAIK, the DSL-2750U is better in every single aspect: more/newer features at a lower price.
The older Netgear ADSL modems also had poor ADSL SNR margins.

Thanks for the Tips guys ... and thanks for pointing out the 2750U Pada ... like I say, it's been a while since I've been in the game ... I would have felt super ripped off paying 1.1k for something I can get better at half the price :P

And Dean says his experience between the two is that they're much of a muchness, but the D-link is cheaper with 3G support ... it's a no brainer.

I read on it that it bonds signals to get 300Mbps ... how does it bond signals coming from the same device? Or does each aerial give out it's own 150Mbps signal, and then it sticks those together to make 1 super aerial? :P

What exactly is MIMO? 1 separate signal out of each aerial and then computers connect to either or?

Pada ... at this point in time, we all connect to a Asus W520GU with 1 aerial and Wireless G 54Mbps ... the problem is the signal gets very weak at my parents room and their phone and tablet keep connecting and disconnecting. All Wi-Fi devices in our house support 802.11n except our router :P ... so does that mean there should be a large improvement on the range of the signal if we get the D-Link? In terms of speed, we only use the network for internet connectivity (and occasionally for me playing online) ... I take it then that 2 aerials will be more than enough speed wise?

By the way ... what is bridging and half-bridging ... what does it do for me?

One cool feature the Netgear has, is that it has Bandwidth monitoring built in ... now that I wouldn't mind :P

Thanks

Hi Guys. So I got the DSL 2750U ... and all seems to be well.
Just one issue for now though. Ever since I connected it ... I'm unable to connect to the Gmail pop and smtp servers ... on port 587 and 995 ... and have absolutely no idea why ... please help :)

Sorry, I don't have the faintest idea why that would happen.

Have you tried putting the ADSL modem in bridge mode and then dialing your ISP account from your PC? If it then still suffers from the same issue, then it is either ISP or Google related.
