How long does one usually study to do web development? Should I also do web design? I have been told the two are very different, is this true?
I've heard that to do web design you need creativity and development requires more of a logical mind. I lean heavily towards the logical side.

I would also (perhaps as a minor) like to study some media content editing/creation. Not exactly graphic design or anything like that, more akin to editing photo's videos etc.

Does anyone know any good areas in Western Cape/Cape Town/Northern Suburbs area?

Is this worth studying?

I essentially want to be able to work from home, but it's not exactly a requirement.

Web development is more the coding side where web design is more the visual side.

Start learning online to see if you enjoy the work. Start by learning HTML and CSS for the basics of web dev.
Then try your hand at Javascript and some of the frameworks like bootstrap, angular etc.
Then you can move on to PHP and MySQL for development and databasing.
Once you've got that down you can try C#, ASP.Net etc if you want to got that root.

For the web design I do simple editing using Macromedia Fireworks which I taught myself to use.

Obviously people might give you alternatives but this is just a starting point. There's rails etc etc that you can check out too.

If you enjoy this type of stuff after trying it out then possibly look at doing a formal qualification.
