My D-Link DSL-2640B decided to pack up over the weekend and I'm looking to replace it with something that supports dual band so I can at least take advantage of my Xbox's wireless adapter's a mode.

After much searching I've decided to get either a D-Link DIR-825 or a Linksys WRT610N. The only problem is that I now need an ADSL modem and I'm pulling my hair out trying to find one that is not a router and costs under R500. The best I've managed to find is the D-Link DSL-2500U but this seems to be a modem/router combination as well.

Please, oh please can you advise a good, reliable ADSL modem that is easy to find in Joburg? Or alternatively, if I get a modem/router like the DSL-2500U will it just work seemlessly with another router?

Also note that I tried searching the forums to see if someone posted like this before, but for some reason my answer of "Telkom" for the required question doesn't seem to work. Am I missing something?

Almost all ADSL modems have firmware that makes them capable of being routers, even if they only have a single LAN port. But once you put it into bridged mode (which you will have to do anyway) it become to all intents and purposes, a modem only. I use a Billion 5200S. Calls itself a router, but for me, its a modem.

Do all ADSL modem/routers work like this? In that case I'm going to get something a bit cheaper than the Billion 5200S.

Thanks muchos for your help.

The D-Link DSL-2500U should work fine. Sub R400.
