Hallo there,

Can someone please help me with a place where i can download software to manage my adsl account. It must show my traffic, and must be able to be set to only allowed so much traffic and then block a user, it must also be password protected not to close it. see i have a computer at home running windows xp pro with 4 accounts on it mine(admin) and then some other users. i want to block them whin they usage go to high.

Thanks

Yeah I was looking for something like this for a bit can'tfind anything not too obtrusive or eat resources on my slow machine :/ or free on windows :)

Um Netlimiter does half of what you want.. but Im not shure about the password protection and limiting users. Netlimiter measures traffic and can limit programs to certain speeds, but nothing to do with seperating users..
However only the Administrator can set the limits and make firwall rules allowing application access (only a firewall on the pro $$ version), so that sorts out your need for a password, the other users will onyl be able to monitor the speed, and if you close the app, there is still a service that runs which enforces your limits so unless they are pretty clever (its a damn hard service to disable) they wont be able to stop the limiting. Also you can make the app hide itself and only start as a proccess for the users who cant change settings (non-admin0 then they wont even know what hit them.

You can also limit the PC manually, so if you see usage being too high you can cut off access (or just slow it to any value) but only manually, and then undo that for yourself obviously...

Sorry no idea what else could do it. Could Netlimiter work okay for?

Krycor, it sounds like you have found something but there are problems, what software are you talking about?

Use Netlimiter Pro 2. It does not allow password protection but you can change permissions for users on the pc to be able to monitor/control. So just set all users to nothing except yourself admin to monitor and control.

Then set up rules governing their internet usage... but just been looking, seems you cannot set a quote so try:

SoftPerfect Bandwidth Manager Traffic control http://www.softperfect.com/products/bandwidth/traffic-control.htm

Can't remember but i couldn't get it to work properly so i gave up, I'll look for the app again.

Okay might as well not read my last post, just read what ziglet said :P
I was busy checking NetLimter out on my PC for the feature you need while I wrote it so its quite long and badly written...

The problem with soft perfect is that it is meant for a network (bussines) type layout. So you cannot specify anything about different users on a single PC, they are assuming you only want to limit other PC's on your network. So i think Netlimiter would be more like what you are looking for..
Unless I am mistaken about the sofperfect thing..

Ok well i tried the softperfect program....

Unfortunately you cannot specify users,only ip addresses.
It is password protected.

(This will only work if using router not usb modem) :
Set each users ip address for the network card interface to a different ip.
eg:
router -> 192.168.1.1
admin -> 192.168.1.2
user1 -> 192.168.1.3
user2 -> 192.168.1.4

this wont affect anything,except that you will then be able to set restrictions in softperfect program with the ip's and not users...

Thats the only way i can think of with the software available :(
