Hi all.

A longstanding hobby of mine, has been working with broadcasting equipment, and small scale broadcasting.

I thought it would be cool to set up a TV station playing throughout the house accessible via Network that plays Music Videos on rotation, in a similar format the old VH1 Classic used to. It would obviously bring up the artist name, and song, the same way VH1 used to. I'm just not sure where to get good quality open source broadcasting software or find a decent program on the world word wide, that would do what I require.

If anyone could give more insight on this, it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What you are looking for is OBS studio..

Will allow you to add whatever you need to your video stream in terms of artist song name etc and output to a network stream you could broadcast across the network and play back on devices using something like vlc..

Looked at OBS, it looks more or less what I'm looking, but I doubt it has the ability to schedule, and arrange playout by genre, and date. Like have it switch from Country at a scheduled time to 80s, and then schedule a bit of everything.

That's not the job of OBS, that's the job of your source that feeds OBS.. In fact, that would not be the job of any broadcast software.. Any broadcast software is going to need a source and your scheduling will be done on the source..

What quality source software would be out there, that would suit that purpose?

Setup an Nginx server with Hls streaming and broadcast using OBS .

I have a couple of channels running and I have created a Samsung, appletv and roku app to watch my channel

What you need is CasparCG - Opensource, windows + lunix, server/client software. Most TV broadcasters in Europe use it.

You can just make some playlists and play it out with vlc.

Problem is, playout software requires a lot of prep work for your content, plus the required hardware. And since the home has moved to individual screens for content on demand, you kinda moving backwards here. I am pretty sure you can simulate a tv channel with kodi and some plugins too.

Showing artist name is kinda pointless, seeing that the music videos are usually background noise and the artist/song detail usually is already part of the video.
