So my domestic is taking a "computer course". I have previously bought her a basic machine, which unfortunately was lost in a fire in Langa.

Her son is studying at PenTech, which is why I bought her the 1st PC: even a basic level PC will give him some advantage.

I have no idea what a "computer course" is, but I do realize that actually owning a PC would help anyone. I imagine the course is a basic "intro to Word" rip-off for the computer illiterate, but she is now unable to work due to health issues. She needs an empoyable skill, she wants this, and so I am trying to help.

Even if she never uses the computer skills, her kids will at least benefit from having a basic computer at home.

I previously got her a R500 machine off Gumtree (complete, monitor and all, so you can probably tell the vintage and power!) - which was fine. It could run XP, basic Office apps and that's about all. That's all she needs.

I'd do the same now - there are P3's on Gumtree for R500, but alas, right now in my financial situation R500 is too much to give as charity.

I know that this forum is not a place to beg, but... if anyone has a similar cheap-ass complete machine that can run Word and possibly Excel (early versions) and you'd like to donate (or sell it cheap), please let me know. I'd appreciate it. So would she.

Edit - Cape Town. I'll collect happily.

If you were closer to my location I could assist you. I have a PC here that I'm about to donate to a similar cause.

I'm sure one of the CPT forumites (I hesistate to use the word Member!) will come to your aid.

If I could get a Raspberry Pi I would get one for myself! I can't think what I would use it for though.. I just want one because I am a nerd

Will have a look around for you, scudsucker. Please confirm maximum you can spend. I will also put in.

Thanks, that would be cool.

As little as possible, to be honest - I am trying to save money for my wedding in Dec. A couple of hundred, maybe 400 max.

I have found a well looked after LGA775 Pentium 4 HT machine. Only problem is that it seems the motherboard's bust, as no onboard or graphics card will produce video.

Anyone perhaps got an old entry level mobo, like G31 or 945 chip set, that will accept DDR2 RAM and a P4?

LOL, I'm in Pretoria and I have a P4 machine and a laptop my GF used in varsity, both of which I want to get rid of so that I can come to Cape Town (not enough space for it in the car).

So sad when distance is an issue.

Uugh, the distance thing.
I have an AMD Sempron 3000+ 2GB RAM Radeon 128MB Radeon 9600XT machine I'd gladly donate.

I have an old AMD LE-1640, but needs a hard drive, and I think the SATA ports might be faulty.
Also have an XP licence key, but no disc.
