The company I work for is looking to build a PC which will become a central server for our products at each customer. Ideally we would like this PC to be as small and discrete as possible. It will run Linux with a web and database server, and interface with our equipment via serial comms.

I've looked at a number of miniITX boards, but in truth, these are probably overkill for what we need. I am hoping to find a local distributor of an embedded system that would suit our needs more specifically.

If you have any information that could possibly assist, please drop me a PM.

Sonic Informed - ask for Tony - indicate that you have been referred by Quincy. - They handle the Zotac

Systems104 - The deal with commell goodies,

corrected the link - www.mini-box.co.za

Also referring to the overkill bit, meaning cost - the mini-itx format costs a great dela more locally, seen as it is not mainstream.

Best cost option would then be to go micro-atx rather.

But Mini-itx in terms of cost, there's no escaping, except if you go with the little valley intel options

Dear Friend,

We regret to inform you that Planet MiniBox has closed its doors as of 16 October 2008.

Going the embedded route is probably going to cost you more I would say from doing some searches in the recent past. Your best/cheapest bet is probably a Intel Atom mini-ITX board. I'm currently trying to find a cheap small case for the mini-itx form factor but not having much luck.

Ponder, I think you may be right about embedded being the expensive way to go.

Not sure about the Atom though.

I can get a LGA775 miniITX board for R1,299. Just add processor (eg. Celeron - R299ex)

The same board with a dual-core Atom is R1,999.

Thanks for the info kayvee.

see my 1st post. Yes I fought to get these imported to our local shores.

I contacted Zotac and there is' a local distributor and when I spoke to them they had stock. Cannot find their mail answer now. Maybe just contact them direct to find the distributor.

 Where are you shopping?

A dual-core Intel Atom 330 board can be had for under R1000, see prophecy & sybaritic sites.
Edit: I see it's on special at minibox for R755! A Via PC1500 going for R349!

A local shop here had the Intel Atom 270 MB + 2GB ram for R700! They are currently selling a complete Atom based PC (minus monitor) for R1600.

That Zotac Atom board was the R1,999ex board I was speaking of in my post... Prophecy's price on this board is R2,500inc or so.

We really have no need for Wi-fi and the nVidia ION video processor either, which is why I was hoping to find something more specific. From the replies I've got so far (honestly, thank you everyone), it looks like there is plenty available for me to look into!

Yeah, I'd say it does. Should suite your application quite nicely, milomak. Price is not too shabby either.

We also Stock all Zotac products along with a lot of others. If you need any info you can mail me and I'll get back to you. If we don't have the product you need we'll make sure we get it.
