If you are any good at what you say you can do you would have no problem finding a job. No need to post on a forum.

I would recommend when advertising for a network job you have experience on something like Cisco Networks where you actually configure a network with Routing, VLANs and Cisco PIX/ASA Firewalls. Asking for a network job and basicly pointing out that you have experience in Server Operating Systems and not even mentioning anyting about real NETWORK experience already implies that you do not really know what a Network Engineer is? Setting up IPTables on a Linux Based Firewall does not make you a Network Engineer. So if a user downloads a firewall for his PC for protection and accept and denies some prompts from the software. Does this make them a Network Engineer?
Well I had a look at your 9 posts you have "contributed" to mybb since you registered on 17-03-2009. I have not seen one forum where you actually talk about anything relevant of the topic. In most cases you confuse users with your obsession with linux and mac even if they asked a normal windows OS question. I did not see one post with anything without mac or linux in your replies.

I would think someone registered for a couple of months on the best technological forum in the country that knows networks even a litle bit would be able to assist on some basic network questions. I did not see anything you have really replied to which replates to a network. Maby the iptables firewall on linux. But I cannot really say much about that since I am no expert on linux.

I also believe that if somebody is really looking for a job in any kind of environment. Asking for a job on a public forum is not always the best method to ask for a job as this makes you look desperate. If you were active on the forum and actually replying on related topics and figuring something out that is truly unique or maby a bit more difficult than what your average joe it tech knows, that might attract attention without even asking for a job from a big boss at some big firm.

There is actually a tab on this site for IT Jobs where you could have went to see what they require from a network engineer.

The problem with IT is that there is to many guys who think they know more than the next guy. Why is it allways a compitition of who have got the most skill? Ever wonder why the general population who have never met a real IT Engineer(being networks, linux, servers... or whatever) refer to the IT group as NERDS? It is because of the obsession of trying to know everything as it is was a compitition and spending time on a PC when you could have went for a nice vacation with family, friends.

Trust me I have worked with alot of Specialists being servers or networks. I have even worked with a CCIE at my work. And not once have I had the feeling of what I get when I go into a Computer Shop. It is just a different kind of person. A real IT Engineer can see signs of real skill or wanabe's.

Sorry if I had to post all this stuff on your thread but this is the general Idea that I get. Maby I am wrong and feel free to correct me if I am. This is also maybe a debate. I am sure I am not the only one who knows this IT delema we have....

And do not get me wrong, I am in no way saying that I am skilled at all in IT. But I can see the problems we do have in the industry. Where they will hire a guy who claims he is an expert in this and that. Like somebody who ads in his CV he is a profesional Web Developer and in real terms he loaded a CMS system and followed some installation instructions.

Anyhows, best of luck to you macxsanity.

@emptyshadow : very well put.

Now... is age a factor, or do the employers tend to look at experience first?

Well. I would say that age is also a factor. Mostly an employer would go for a matured personality. In most cases older workers will give more dedication to your work. Also it is more likely that and older person is more experienced. Even if a youngster is experienced enough and dedicated enough to the job. It is not allways easy since we do have these problems I mentioned in my previos post.

I do want to appologize to macxsanity for any embarasement I might have caused. I do get upset with some posts and things I see day to day in the industry.
Macxsanity since I saw you have some Linux skills and you did not say that you did write the exams. I would suggest if you have not yet done the exams to do them. Even if you have the skills, in today's world and in the financial crisis we are in. It is always good to have as much proof as possible. Corporate Company's does not generally hire people who gives the information of their skills without a propper proof of it.

I do feel guilty if my post was bit nasty and I appologize...
