Skype somehow manages to connect directly to another person on the lan over the lan network and not over the internet. To test this theory, I phone my friend on skype and unplugged the internet connection. We could still talk even after the internet was disconnected.

Can you make the initial connection even with Internet disconnected?

So yes, it should work, but one PC has to be designated as a supernode as far as I know... so... if you are connected to the internet, you may find some outgoing traffic when calls are placed, dependent on whether your PCs can act as supernodes or not. If they can, then this could also mean more traffic on the net as others will use you to locate other users. It all depends on whether or not you are on the net from the get go on each PC and how your firewall is configured. Any real Skype fundis out there want to confirm this?

Basically NO.

The Lan needs internet access so all the skype clients on the lan PC's can aquire "presence".

So when Joe Bloggs wants to contact Jane Bloggs, Joe will contact the skype "presence" server, who will inform him that Jane is actually on the same IP as him so why not contact her directly. All Voice packets will then be routed locally so the "cost" of this simple solution is a small amount of international bandwidth.

The other option would be an asterisk server on the lan - much more complicated but has far more features

Interesting point and my best guess is that the clients on the same lan as the client initiating the conference call will route over the lan, while anyone else will obviously be routed over the internet.

May play around this afternoon and confirm that!

AFAIK Skype is P2P, so unless there is a problem with traffic routing on your LAN (local firewalls on PCs, etc), it should in theory go via the LAN.
