Looking for wireless ISP in Pretoria area

Hi Librarian person,

I have the 64k flavour of GWI's wireless and I'm very happy with it.
I'm currently paying R199pm and I get average speeds of between 160kbps and 192kbps.

I'm in the Northern suburbs of Pretoria.

R199pm for that kind of connection... now THAT kicks ass seriously... :D

Have you bought the equipment from them?

I have made up my mind to go with them, but want to get several things in order before I do so, first and foremost is the speed test.

Yeah, I got my aerial and router from them.
I use the grid aerial though, which cost me R2.5k

I've been connected since mid January and I've had a few hiccups but now it's all better :)

my ping to google is 299ms
and my ping to mweb is 63ms
So I get good latencies as well as good speeds.
I think the speed they charge you for is more of a guaranteed minimum, and can't go lower than that because they limit the number of people per connection. In my area (Wonderboom) there are a lot of people connected, when I spoke to the installers in January they said they have about 60 clients connecting to my tower and they are adding people at a rate of 1 or 2 a day.

I don't see any change in speeds throughout the day, so they are obviously doing something right.

WRT the speed test, they brought a tablet PC attached to a short pole and a flat panel aerial to test where to do the installation. They didn't make an appointment to test if I have good enough signal prior to installation because I have direct line-of-sight to the tower on the mountain. Call your local reseller and get them to give you a signal test, then go from there.

The last time I spoke to my local guys they were going to replace my aerial and router to a newer and better model because they were having issues with the older ones, but it turned out that my problem was with some obscure account settings and not with the hardware.

I would recommend them if you have good enough signal, it's a far cry better than anything Telkom can offer me under R500pm!

Vodacom dropped their prices, but I'm not interested at this stage. They're still offering capped accounts, and I'm looking for an uncapped account as I'll be doing a lot of downloading (I'm an IT Professional, and need to download drivers and programs to try out).
