Looking to Build a Midrange Pc on a TIGHT BUDGET

I'd say it's the safest 2nd-hand community in SA. For what that's worth. There are scammers now and then - they get banned very quickly.

Using some common sense and asking established members of the community for insight / scam detection is always possible.

Common sense will help you navigate the mess.

1. Check how many posts they have - if they're selling their R25k PC for R10k and have 9 posts, steer clear.
2. Ask for photos of the actual parts - not Google or manufacturer pics.
3. If you swap numbers, check the number actually belongs to someone of the same name.
4. If they demand a deposit before shipping, check in with some of the longer term members. Given that you will be the new guy, it's likely an established member may well ask for deposit / full payment up front, given that you're an unknown entity. Using trusted members for advice / 3rd party facilitation is an option.

Add 4gb ram more and replace the gpu with something better like the GTX 750TI and we are in the +- R3k budget.

Thanks for the really great advice! i will register on Carbonite and then check out what Intel builds they have. i don't mind doing all the research and googling of parts, as i really want to get a decent pc going. should have splurge alot on a pc before i got married and had kids. now everything is about budget budget budget :D

that does sound like a good deal. hopefully it will still be around next month still..then i will get it. im having to buy my wife a phone this month. its her birthday month. so my budget is going towards that this month.

Yea you can do that, no worries. Rather just use this thread for any updates and questions.

Also, be an active member there. There's a minimum post count required for access to the classifieds section if I recall correctly, but either way, nobody wants to part with their PC to an unknown entity with 2 posts.

Get active and contribute so by the time you're ready to buy, you're somewhat known.

sorry guys..one last question. i usually use Smartprix when i compare phones, and it breaks it down very well, and ranks all the phones ive added from number 1.

is there a similar website for PC components? where you select different pc parts, and it kicks out all the specs and ranks them in a table?

There are sites which do becnhmark tables which illustrate relative performance.

Tom's Hardware Relative CPU Hierarchy

You can also use a site like this to build a PC and get relative performance numbers. This is synthetic so may not fully reflect exact performance in games but should give you a good idea of what you're looking at.
 
Xbox One S, it's got an AMD Motherboard, APU, 8 gigs of memory and it will play the games at pretty much the spec they want :-)

Also consider refurbished PCs. Years ago, I used to know a supplier or two in CT. Google should help though.

Nah I'm kidding. He did specifically state a PC and I assumed he has reasons for that, but if it is just for media and gaming, a console isn't a bad option and he would get something new, with warranty, in the price range.
