how safe is Carbonite? i don't wanna end up getting dud parts, and maybe even fraudsters who bail the minute they get the bucks
I'd say it's the safest 2nd-hand community in SA. For what that's worth. There are scammers now and then - they get banned very quickly.
Using some common sense and asking established members of the community for insight / scam detection is always possible.
Common sense will help you navigate the mess.
1. Check how many posts they have - if they're selling their R25k PC for R10k and have 9 posts, steer clear.
2. Ask for photos of the actual parts - not Google or manufacturer pics.
3. If you swap numbers, check the number actually belongs to someone of the same name.
4. If they demand a deposit before shipping, check in with some of the longer term members. Given that you will be the new guy, it's likely an established member may well ask for deposit / full payment up front, given that you're an unknown entity. Using trusted members for advice / 3rd party facilitation is an option.
