Hi all,

I have been given a $2000 budget to purchase a computer for research purposes. The computer will be used for DNA sequence analysis and modelling and as such needs to have processing power as will as reasonable graphics capabilities for rendering 3D models. It might also be used for hosting a web service. So far I am looking at the following specs:

Processor: Intel Xeon E3 1220 (3.1Ghz/4M) CPU
Motherboard: Intel Bear Tooth Svr MB
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1333 ECC Ram
Storage: 240GB Solid State Drv + 3TB 7.2K RPM HDD
Graphics: PNY Nvidia Quadro 2000 1GB or PNY Nvidia Quadro 600 1GB
Other: DVD writer

I would like to use as much of my budget as possible though to get the best possible machine I can and this doesn't quite do that. Any suggestions, either to improve this specification, or for a completely new specification would be welcomed. I find it difficult to do such things myself as my hardware knowledge is minimal at best and I never know which parts are compatible etc.

Thanks in advance :)

Just a quick question, are you going to be buying local (South Africa) or from overseas?

The PC at the bottom of this link seems to fulfill most of your requirements, and you can always add onto it with this company:

Add more GFX cards until you hit your budget. If you are looking for raw number crunching power you can't really do better than a bunch of SLI Quadro's on CUDA. Especially now that they support double precision operations.

Also, if you are going to be using MATLAB for the modelling, it now has native CUDA support for matrix operations which is quite a big plus.
