Hi Guys

Our I.T. department are looking at migrating all users from Microsoft to Ubuntu. Everything we have tested thus far, bar one application, is running perfectly. 99% of in-house apps are web based, and run perfectly fine using Chrome. However one application which we use and is not in-house requires IE and .NET 3.5. Is there anyway around this or any suggestions I can try? I use WINE for 1 application, so if there is a way of doing it through there I would be open for that. Checking WINEHQ though seems to show that these two apps are extremely difficult to get running properly.
I have also contacted the software house, who have replied saying they have no road-map to support other browsers or operating systems which seems very short sighted to me.

You can get .NET and IE stuff working in Wine but as mentioned, it's buggy and not guaranteed in any way to work 100%. I cannot think of any way around this.

I am also looking into this yes, but just in case it is not going to work I would like to have other options available.

Terminal services works well, I use it on linux based thick and thin clients for a similar reason. The only thing that is a pain is printing from it.
Still it would be better to run it as a native app.

And this will be my last resort yes. We're trying to get away from the crazy Microsoft licensing prices, so don't really want to have a virtual machine using a license just for this.

Yeah, I was thinking that as soon as I mentioned VirtualBox :o

Is this a web app? Why would the web app require .NET 3.5 on the client machines? I'm just trying to wrap my head around your situation.

It is a web app yes, and to answer your question, probably just rubbish or lazy programming! Unfortunately the developers have a "take it or leave it" attitude and are not even willing to assist.

It's been done in ASP.NET? The pages should all be rendered server side. ASP.NET pages work perfectly in Linux, they only require their server to be Windows based.

This is ridiculous- your company are migrating OS's and these clowns aren't willing to correct code to meet that?

I certainly didn't mean it like that. It's their software and they can do what they wish with it. All I asked for was a road-map for supporting other browsers, as I believe only supporting I.E. is very short-sighted on their part.

IMO it might be worthwhile to re-look this 1 application vs the cost of licenses and decide on maybe re-writing it in PHP or something

Can you explain what happens when you open the web app in Chrome? .NET 3.5 should not be a pre-requisite on any client machine loading ASP.NET pages.

Exceedingly. Who the hell supports IE over other browsers? :wtf:

What I don't get is that this seems to be a business decision that they are expressly ignoring? Why are they unable to provide compatibility for another browser?

It just pops up with a page stating that .NET 3.5 is not loaded on this computer. Please install and relaunch the browser.

Exact same machine, if I open with I.E. 9 it opens with no problems.
