Looking to start a WISP - what upstream provider to use

Good morning.

I'm looking to start a small-scale WISP in the Garden Route, and have got most of my research and planning done, including ICASA licenses.

My biggest obstacle at the moment is what upstream provider to use, and whether microwave as a medium would work. I don't have access to fibre unfortunately.

Whoever gives you the best deal.

You'll need to know roughly how much bandwidth you want, details like what size IP prefixes you want (if you don't have your own address allocations), and where you want the bandwidth delivered. Get hold of some salespeople at ISPs, tell them your requirements, and ask them to make you proposals. You could consider Neotel, IS, Vodacom Business, MTN Business, Telkom, amongst a great many others.

It's definitely worth joining WAPA (www.wapa.org.za) to get assistance with the licensing and really good assistance on the forums, from other WISPs around the country
