Hi
I was wondering if someone could help me clarify a salary issue that i'm currently struggeling with.

I've contacted a bunch of people and no one can give me a straight answer :( so i am hoping you can.

I manage a small guesthouse, which means that i work in the hospitality industry. I understand that Sundays is paid at a rate of 1.5 my normal houerly wage and public holidays at a rate of 2 my normal houerly wage. Overtime is also paid at a rate of 1.5 my normal houerly wage.

So i've worked for 2 different hospitality companies in the past; Protea Hotels and now i manage a small guesthouse and both of these establishments paid me different, so i want to check which establishment is correct (according to my knowledge Protea Hotels paid me correctly, but i just want to get my facts straight)

senario:

Basic salary R 14 500
Houerly wage R 14500 ÷ 195 hours = R 74.36
Let's say a worked 2 Sundays in a month, 8 hours each and 1 public holiday, also 8 hours

Protea hotel would have paid me as follows:

Basic Salary R 14500
Sunday time (R74.36x0.5x16hours) R 594.88
Public holiday (R 74.36x1x8 hours) R 594.88
Total R 15689.76

The guesthouse would have paid me as follows:

Basic Salary R 14500
Sunday time (R74.36x1.5x16hours) R 1784.64
Public holiday (R 74.36x2x8 hours) R 1189.76
Total R 17474.40

Which one would be correct?

Protea hotel said that we work for 195 hours which includes sunday and public holiday hours and that is why they multiply Sundays by 0.5, because if they multiply it by 1.5, they would have ultimately paid me at a rate of 2.5 for hours worked on a sunday and same with the public holiday. Is this correct?

Hoping you can assist me.

I would recommend you head over to Legal Talk South Africa and pose the question there.

In our case the same applies for a Sunday. In 24/7 environment so makes sense. Sunday seen as working hours but we get double so getting x1 extra for Sunday.
Public holiday is a legal holiday and can not be seen as part of working hours. If we work, we get x2 extra.

Guesthouse is correct..

Since Sunday would be an ordinary day of work for you, you would be paid 1.5x for hours worked..

Public holidays are paid double..

but since Sundays is a normal work day for me, isn't it part of my 195 monthly hours already paid with my basic salary? meaning if they pay me an additional 1.5, i ultimately get 2.5 my houerly rate for sundays work

yes if sundays are part of your normal hours then they are doing it correctly to add 0.5 to form 1.5x (since you're already paid the 1x). ultimately this would come down to your employee contract and what it states, according to contracts both places could be correct.
fyi Sundays are more commonly paid at double, but varies by industry. shift workers might not get anything extra at all
