Accra - President John Kufuor of Ghana has come under heavy criticism after leaked documents show that his government spent £33 000 on a medal which was used to decorate him at a national awards ceremony.

Kufuor created a new award category, "the Grand Order of the Star and Eagles of Ghana" to the annual list of awards, explaining that it was only for people who render outstanding services in the presidential job, starting with himself.

Despite the controversy, the award ceremony took place last week.

"Kufuor joins Amin and Bokassa", a newspaper wrote then.

"He has given himself the highest national honour with all smiles and pomp. Obviously he could not trust the verdict of the people on his administration so he decided to proclaim himself the greatest," said the Insight newspaper, edited by one of the government's most ardent critics, Kwesi Pratt.

But just as the controversy over the president's award was dying down, it was revealed that the medal cost £33 000 and that five of them were ordered from British-based Cleave and Company International.

Millions spent on medals ceremony

The leaked document also indicated that about $1.4m was spent on the medals for the national awards ceremony. This has sparked another round of criticism for Mr. Kufuor, who leaves office in just about six months.

"Upon all our problems, the best the president can do is to buy such an expensive piece of jewellery for himself," Adoley Laryea, a secretary told AFP in Accra. "No wonder we are not going anywhere."

"All this money could have been used to build a small health centre in my village or even to provide some vital equipment for Korle Bu [the country's main teaching hospital] where pregnant women are often compelled to sleep on the floor," says John Ocloo, who describes himself as a marketer.

"Is the president planning on selling the medal after his tenure?" Joojo, a student, asked in disbelief.

Responding to the mounting criticism, a statement from the Office of the President said the furore was politically motivated, especially as the country prepares to vote in polls in December.

Political undertone

"While we recognise the legitimacy for the media to raise questions on important events or issues like the National Honours and Awards Day and to seek clarification where necessary, we find the political undertone in these reports unmistakably loud," the statement said.

"Government has no regrets for honouring her heroes and heroines. In our view they deserve even more. Much as we recognise and accept constructive criticism, we think the current one is a petty red herring introduced only to advance the agenda and ambitions of the architects of these reports."

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress is planning to take the government on for buying the medals without parliamentary approval, according to Benjamin Kumbuor, the party's spokesperson on finance in the legislature.

hahahahahahahaha. Why do the presidents of African countries feel the need to tell the whole world they are not the worst leaders in the world - and in the same breath their stench of incompetence overwhelms.

Do they even realise they are pathetic?

Africa, my Africa, I weep for you! This is the sort of mentality civilization has to contend with and yet there are educated white folk out there defending these "rulers". It is way beyond my comprehension. :(

Case in point.

Depends on what you view as pathetic really.

The only presidents in Africa's history who served with dignity is Mandela and FW de Klerk.

Other "presidents" only see it as being the leader of the sandbox "my sand castle is bigger than your sand castle".

Pathetic are people who tell others how great they are when nobody else thinks so.

Agreed on Mandela & FW! I don't think though, that Ghana's president is nearly half as bad as some of the others out there. Most prestigious medals/honours are born out of someone giving themselves a slap on the back.

Meaning you always bring up some racist element in your posts, I find that pathetic.

The reason for that is I am a racist. But I am happy to admit to that. As I have pointed out before, there are only two kinds of sane people. Racists and liars. Which are you?

While we are all entitled to our own views, you'll note there's a sticky in this section regarding racism so if you want to rant about the evils of people of different colour keep it to a forum that welcomes those types of views.

Gee thanks man! That's really sporting of you. But please let me know what types of views are you limited to on this forum? Is it only your type or is there room for an opinion you may not like or agree with?

If I'm not mistaken the "rant" was about white people (quoth Rozier "there are educated white folk out there"), so in your eagerness to portray whites as racist baddies you seem to have confused yourself.

You're entitled to think this kind of thing is OK but in the value system I was raised, politicians granting themselves medals (especially using small fortunes of taxpayer money that was intended to help the people) is considered disgusting and despicable behaviour. It's 'not done'. We're perfectly entitled to disagree with it.

Whatever, quite happy to let him join NoAdslYet, IamCanadian's special group.

I have to also give a big up to Sam Njomo. There is an African leader I can admire.

He mentioned Africa as a continent, he didn't go insulting Condolezza Rice or Colin Powell or Barrack Obama. Africa happens to be a pretty bad, underdeveloped place where the leadership more often than not
prefer to look after their own behinds than those of their electorate.

There is nothing racist there unless you mean his remarks about 'educated white people' defending African despots. To me it seems more of an insult at these people or their 'education'.

Seriously, Africa is a messed up continent. I don't know what the world and the residents of Africa can do about it - but unlike every other continent out there including South America (with its primitive Indian tribes - a tribe of which was discovered just a few months ago), the development of Africa is not going ahead as well (despite that many of its leaders are more pompous than any other.

I'm sure there are PUBLIC schools, universities and hospitals in Ghana which would benefit more from 33.000 GBP than his little slap on the back.

Seriously, do you think a poor country like Ghana should be able to afford
such expensive trinkets for it's leaders? Remember Ghanese taxpayers (and possibly foreign aid) paid for those medals, unless the president took it
out of his salary - a salary which is in line with the GDP of his country.

See real leaders would donate to charity and in the form of a trust fund create enough money to cover the medal costs and enough to help a certain cause also.
