Losing 2010 laughable

It took Germany 6 years, and we're only starting now. Danny Jordaan is living in a fantasy world. Rather be pessimistic and get the job done than optimistic and run out of time, which is exactly what happened to the Gautrain.

Fifa coming to evaluate in 2008.

From another article

He was reacting to Gautrain project leader Jack van der Merwe telling a media conference in Johannesburg that Germany could host the event for a second time should evaluators in 2008 feel South Africa was not ready to do so.

African and some South American nations would leave Fifa if they ever pulled the contest from South Africa ... by hook or by crook we will be ready even if Fifa have to take control from the local soccer folks if they see that preparations are not sufficent or on pace.

We handled the World Rugby Cup so we can pull it off.

Some sensible ideas there...

Tibby it's not the matter of pulling it off by hook or crook, but this world cup was supposed to show the rest of the world what we're capable of. Don't you think we would be creating a bad impression for ourselves if FIFA had to take control of things? After all we need the foreign investment post-2010, would people actually want to invest in us if we're slow-paced?

hj2k_x : Would really love for Cape Town to hire him to help improve CT

Soccer is whole different ballgame (no pun intended). The soccer will pull at least twice as many fans to SA than the rugby.

Ticket prices will probably exclude most of the poorer supporters, thus more tourists will be going to matches. This will put a huge strain on our public transport. Europeans expect proper public transport. I've worked with a few of them, and 9/10 of them don't believe me when I tell them that we don't have proper trains and our bus services is 20years out of date. Until they get here, and hire a car for their entire stay.

Stadiums takes a while to build, if you build it properly. Also more accommodations are needed, not like with the African games a few years back, where people had to go live in townships, getting mugged and robbed of their sports equipment (know a guy that did the bicycle event, got mugged/robbed of everything but his underpants).

We still have a ways to go, and I might sound pessimistic, but I don't think anything majors would have happened by 2008.

Indeed it will be but remember the tournament is organized by SAFA and not the govt as Fifa has rather a low tolerance for any sort of govt meddling in their sport.

The chaps and clubs in SAFA can basically kiss their little soccer empire goodbye if they mess this one up :).

And here is what Fifa said when they gave the tournament to us.

"We are very impressed with the facilities on offer in South Africa," commented Jim Brown, Director of Competitions. "The majority of the stadiums and training sites that we visited have an existing infrastructure which is used regularly to host international and cup football matches and also rugby. We are confident that with the upgrades and renovations that have been outlined, South Africa can deliver an outstanding FIFA World CupTM in five years' time."

"The purpose of the visit was to check the bid documentation with the current reality," added Markus Siegler, FIFA's Director of Communication. "The inspection was perfectly and professionally organised and FIFA was able to establish first contacts and the foundations for a partnership with the LOC and city and stadium representatives. Everyone was well prepared in all of the eight possible venues. They were clearly aware of our requirements and demonstrated high commitment, passion and excitement for 2010. Overall it was a very positive first look and feel."

Yes, this is indeed a good sign. It is just a pity that little seems to have been done since then...

Perhaps they are in meetings :).

There is always that possibility :)

Still, if it was going to come to Africa then South Africa was the best bet - at least we are in position to be able to sort things out in time. i dont think that would have been the case had any other African country got it...

Typical ZAR!

Fifa also reiterated

There is a real sense that transportation, security, accommodation, IT , and other essential components of hosting a FIFA World Cup™ will be delivered as required.

Now have any of those really taken shape yet! Now we cannot even handle basic day to day traffic pressures and Security is going down fast! So where is the progress to be shown as yet, Broadband issues is still on hold, will take years before anything happens the rate the GVT is going, so is the transport sector. The Gautrain is only a small piece of the puzzle, where is the rest of the plans! Oh more toll gates I think! and then the IT or rather broadband availability? Triple play, Telkom wants to enrich themselves only so I do not think this would help. Maybe someone else has better plans but be sure Telkom will even make them suffer!

But government needs to deliver the goods SAFA cant bring broadband or transportation to the people.

correction - less than three: fifa confederations cup which is kind of a dress rehearsal must be done here as well

"What has changed since we won (the bid) to hold the World Cup? Why will we suddenly now lose it?" Jordaan asked from Germany.

Inadvertently he hit the nail on the head. Nothing has changed, thats the problem. Where are the new stadiums? Transportation? IT Infrastructure? Security?

But in the end it doesn't matter. FIFA wont take it away from SA even if they have to host some of the games at a school football field. They would rather SA looked bad then themselves.

We are the WC hosts, signed and sealed, there will be no reversal.
