I have the dstv extraview setup with a pvr and the small ugly silver decoder. Over the last 2 days I've get a lost connection error on the small decoder but only on certain channels like mnet and the movie channels. Comedy central and food network works properly. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you know what the issue could be?

Could be that the decoder is only receiving horizontal channels, if you have a spare port on a multiswitch swop the cable thats going to the decoder with the spare one & check

Would it just stop working though, everything worked fine for the last 6 months.

This started happening on both decoders last night. Seems like all the multichoice channels dont work. Mnet,mm1,supersport etc. All other channels work fine.

Swop the 2 input cables into the switch. Rescan. If you now have the missing channels back and you lost the working ones, you have an issue on the one cable from the dish. Could be the cable itself or the output from the LNB. Could even be LNB skew.

Similar issue, I always cut the power to both decoders, this resets the multiswitch and it works after that.

Ive tried that but doesn't change anything. I think it might have something to do with the cabling. Need to get onto the roof to have a look.

Nope... A switch has nothing that can be reset. It either works or it doesn't.

OK I spent R 900 for a new "smart LNB" - make: DSTV model LMX501.
Local agent convinced me that the future proof DSTV requirement is not to have a switch as the future signal pattern will not work with the switch.
Also when I disassembled the whole lot, one of the in-coming switch terminals was loose. I suspect that that was the root cause.
Now the two cables from the new LNB go directly into the two decoders; PVR and extraview - no switch and 4 fewer cables.
The signals are perfect - signal quality says 100% - and the image on the SONY TV screen is pristine/very sharp.
I do not know if I did the right thing but now my wife is SUPER HAPPY! So that is all that counts.
