Lost phone and Google Play

Hey everyone,

A couple of weeks ago on the way home from a night out, my phone slipped out of my pocket (HTC Desire S) in the taxi I was in. A few minutes after we got out the cab I realized and used my friends phone to try and call it, but there was no answer after many tries so I eventually called Vodacom customer care (I am with Vodacom) and got the SIM blocked. The next day I went down to the Vodacom store and got the phone blacklisted and all that jazz.
Now back to the present - for some reason today I decided to look at my devices on Google Play and I noticed something: next to my lost phone it says the carrier is Cell C and the date last used is 26 August 2012. Am I right in assuming that someone is now using a Cell C SIM card in that phone? If so, would there be any way to find out the number of that SIM card?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Regards,
James

You can use Plan B from the app store to find your phones location, but i don't know of any apps that will send you the number, it is most likely in another country by now though so getting the number won't help much

The cops will be able to track it.
Problem is, they might not bother.

Try Plan B as Nduimiso suggested.

You can actually install applications to your phone via the web interface. Find an app designed for this (like Plan B) and just install it. Next time that sucker has internet access your handset will download the app, and BOOM, you haz him.

Does it not send it to the handset on which the Google Play account is logged in?

You can go to the play store from your PC, where you can select which device to install to

But by this time the OP is no longer logged on to Google Play on the stolen device, so this would be useless?

Idiot with the phone obviously doesn't know to add his own Gmail account.. He's still logged in with OP's account info, therefore James can install whatever he wants to his lost phone..

Op just change your Google account password. That way the "thief" can't access your phone anymore. It will be rendered useless.

And by doing that he loses all hope of getting it back.

OP, what I would do is remotely install a tracking app (like others have suggested) to see in which region your phone is.

How will this render the phone useless?

Thanks everyone for your replies and helpful advice :) I read about Plan B a week or so after I lost the phone and gave it a try, but sadly it didn't work. I guess I'll just have to give up and take the experience as a lesson learned. At least now I'll be more cautious and install Wheres My Droid on my old/new phone.
