Lotus Emeya sets new charging record

The Lotus Emeya was unveiled last year and it went on sale in China before orders started in the EUand UK back in March of this year (with deliveries coming between July and September). To drive up some hype (are the order books emptier than expected?), the brand has now announced that the Emeya broke a record.

For charging. From 10% to 80% using a public charger. It takes only 14 minutes using a 400 kW DC fast charger. The claim was validated by "leading global consulting firm" P3, Lotus says. The Emeya came out on top of P3's list of fastest charging EVs.

It competed with the likes of the Mercedes EQS, BMW i7, Tesla Model Y, Genesis G80, XPeng G9, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Nio ET5, and BYD Atto 3. None of those cars is in the same range as the Emeya, but for some reason they were pitted against it anyway.

Second ultra-powerful Lotus EV joins the Dubai Police fleet following the acquisition of an Eletre last year

Considering it has a Bugatti Veyron in its fleet, Dubai’s police department can confidently claim the title of coolest lineup of crim-busting cars in the world, and now it's taking a strong interest in the British stuff too. And no, we aren’t talking about a 56-reg Astra diesel.

Y’see, the Middle East’s most boujee blues and twos team has now taken delivery of its second all-electric Lotus; an Emeya S which follows in the footsteps of an Eletre R that was purchased last year. Must remember that Lotus has now removed the S and R monikers for new Emeyas and Eletres, though. Anyway, the saloon will join the Tourist Police Department, so its job will be to silently prowl around popular attractions like the Burj Khalifa.

The Dubai Police also says this addition highlights the importance it places on employing sustainable vehicles, and the forward-thinking approach it shows. It might also be because the Emeya is… really rather quick. The dual-motor powertrain sends 603bhp and 524lb ft of torque to all four wheels, allowing for a 4.2s sprint to 62mph. Not quite as quick as a 56-reg Astra diesel, obviously, but we can let that slide.

The cool livery more than makes up for that. It combines a glossy white body with dark green vinyls and black trim elements, including black alloys. Reckon this is a good hire for Dubai's police force?

The record-setting test, independently completed by Lotus Al Ghanim in Kuwait, targeted the critical 10 percent to 80 percent charge window - the most common metric for real-world use. Hooking up to Lotus’s own ultra-fast 450 kW DC charger, the Lotus Emeya reached a peak charging rate of a stunning 443 kW.

The result? The car boosted its battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 13 minutes and 35 seconds. This feat took place in Kuwait’s intense heat, proving that the vehicle and the charging technology are durable and reliable even under tough conditions.

To achieve this kind of lightning-fast pit stop, the Lotus Emeya relies on a few key technical features that put it on the cutting edge of modern EVs. Central to its performance is the 800V charging system. This high-voltage architecture is specifically designed to handle rapid charging speeds and deliver greater overall efficiency, no matter the specific charger a driver uses. This same system is also found in the Lotus Eletre, the company’s powerful hyper-SUV.
