Stopped on an incline and pulled handbrake up and got out. As I closed the door, I heard a loud crack and the car started moving back. Jumped back in and pulled handbrake up further and it stopped.
Took it for a drive on a sand road and pulled handbrake and both wheels locked.
What can this be?

Depends on the car but part of the handbrake mechanism broke (or came loose) else the car wouldn't suddenly start rolling down. Are you sure both of the wheels are locking and not just one?

What kind of car? Does it have disks or drums?

One of your drums are binding to the pad - possibly because of a faulty / broken pad.. get it looked at ASAP or it could bind during a trip.

It is a smart for four. All round discs.
Handbrake lever moved halfway down when I heard the noise.
Jacked car up both sides and checked handbrake. All working ok.
Will take it in tomorrow.
Thank you.
