So getting my lossless collection sorted in iTunes, managed to find everything in .flac from "sources".
I came across a forum where they where discussing the loudness wars into details , so apparently there are different releases of the same album, sometimes remastered by a different guy.
Take Phil Collins - But Seriously

There are albums released in Germany , France (same mastering guy) and then there are WEA, Atlantic Records, Virgin etc. (different mastering guy)
With "audiophiles" saying the Germany, France releases are the best.
A nice site comparing album releases to confirm that certain releases are mastered louder - http://dr.loudness-war.info/
I have noticed with especially re-releases of albums that they are much louder and to me often sound worse than the original releases, just never really put much thought into it.
Here I have been avoiding the "old" releases and going for the new ones in my playlist but testing last night on a couple of my fav songs, I actually enjoy the original releases.
