Hey all

My GF and I were browsing around a music store (I think it was a Musica?) when she presented me with an LP of Black Sabbath's "13" I couldn't believe my eyes, I always thought this technology was "old" and long gone lol!

Anyways, so it has come to my realization that a lot of Bands these days are releasing LP versions of their Albums :wtf: and I would really like to begin an LP collection of my own - just like my Dad's hehehe. I think this is awesome especially in this digital age where music has become so "disposable" and I think owning an original copy with Pics and Bios and Lyrics and liner notes far outweighs a plastic CD jewel case....

- Do any of you perhaps know where we can buy LP's in a store, or online with a wider variety and of the Hard Rock / Metal / Alternative Genre?

Much Appreciated!

Most of the good stuff you'll have to order online. All the hipster and hippie friendly music is readily available in stores like Musica or Look & Listen.

For me it's juist fashion. It's impractical and for the most part fake.

I laughed so hard when I saw what Musica tries to charge for LPs.

Trying to rip people of with something that is fashionable now.

Wonder when retro cellphones will be coming........oh wait............

On Topic:If you in Cape Town then you can try Milnerton Market and there is a record shop in Simonstown.

like putting a 8 track player in your car - if you can remember them.

lol, you guys laugh - but remember the days when people got ripped off for using those big a$$ Nokia phones the size of bricks....yet these days it is fashionable to talk on their "Phablets" in public places, i kid you not I saw someone use their 7.1 inch tablet as a cellphone it was HILARIOUS, looked like a complete moron....

Visit AV Forums, lots of guy's still into Vinyl.
There are Vinyl events periodically where you can go buy LP's etc.

VINYL RULES !!

technically the quality on a vinyl is better on a regular CD, but high quality audio files have pretty much covered it. Vinyl is hipster as hell, but it is cool if you are completely obsessed with music.

I've read differently - currently released vinyl is made from the digital remasters of the original analogue masters. It is like making a record from a CD. Lemme see if I can find the link

You may be right on that one, I was referring to the old LPs, not the new ones that they release lately, I don't know much about those.

There are almost no LP stores in South Africa.... the best bet would be to import them off ebay if you're looking for anything that is not mainstream. 180 gram vinyls are king! The sound quality off a vinyl is the best you can get imo.

Went to London a few years back and was surprised to see a number of record stores selling and/or specializing in vinyl. There they had quite a collection of old (classic) and new albums available, new as in the latest pop artists (Gaga, Perry, etc) and a couple of rock bands.

If you're in Cape Town you'll find a couple of shops in the CBD and surrounds that'll sells or even specializes in them. Like Mabu Vinyls (from the movie Searching for Sugarman) Mabuvinyl.co.za

1. Mabu Vinyl (CPT)
2. Revolution Records (CPT)
3. Steeve’s Record Shop (PTA)
4. Voom Voom Vintage (CPT)
5. Multi-Racial Records (PTA)
6. iSalon Music Recordings (PTA)
7. Record Mad (JHB)
8 Jazz Avenue (JHB)
9. Just CDs (JHB)
10. Deerhunter (CPT)

Forgot to mention that the shops in CPT will be filled to the brim with hipsters. Not just plain, almost bearable ones, those over the top ones. So, if you hate hipsters, you're gonna have a bad time. Maybe tell them there's a special on at an organic market or that mixtapes are making a comeback and is all the rage.

The mix on the vinyl usually is different from the CD. They're usually not affected as much by the "loudness wars".

Vinyl is expensive, the biggest issue you will face is finding a decent turntable, which starts at about R3000

if you are going to spend R3000 on a turntable, then you might as well get good sound, and so the journey starts and never ends. Note I am not even talking about the actual vinyl which is cheap relative to the equipment required.

If you are obsessed with music like me, then you will love collecting vinyls. Old vinyls are very cheap,R20-R30. New vinyls are expensive. The basic principle of supply and demand works here. Modern day bands only release a limited amount of vinyls. Die hard fans will want these vinyls, so obviously you pay more when there is limited supply. Its more of a hobby than anything, and people love the nostalgic value behind it.New turntables are pricey. Rather look for a nice old system which runs off valves which will give the music a totally different sound.
