Does Vodacom support LTE on the iPhone 5?

I've enabled LTE on my account via vodacom.co.za but have only seen 3G so far even though have been in LTE coverage areas according to the maps.

I saw a post somewhere that it has been enabled in iOS 6.1 betas, so probably not too much of a wait.

May I ask how did u you do that online? I've logged in but i dont know what to do!

Surely it would be the network operator's decision ultimately, as controller by their Carrier profile?

That's how Apple sells it to you, yet their default is to disable features like hotspot etc. unless the operators cough up the moola for a carrier agreement.

Can you think of any reason why Vodacom would want to prevent you from using more data?

Some of the US operators that have unlimited data plans, sure.

OK interesting, never knew it worked that way, thought each carrier dictated what was in their profile e.g. Vodacom 13.0 on my phone.

As much as I could extract from an inside source, so probably over simplified, but I believe accurate.

Let's take the release of the iPad 3rd gen as an example:
1) The device is sold outright carrier free with hotspot support as an advertised feature (fine print says carrier dependent)
2) You select Vodacom as your carrier and discover Apple's default profile they created for Vodacom that shipped with iOS 6 explicitly had hotspot disabled even though the default carrier bundle for iPhone on Vodacom had hotspot enabled. This forces Vodacom to bang on Apple's door (hand over the cash) and patiently wait months for either a carrier bundle update or iOS update to include one. I will note here that other carriers across the globe did in fact get carrier bundles pushed out after the iPad 3rd gen was released. Not sure why they can get it done in 2-3 months and Vodacom have to wait (is it almost a year now?).
3) If instead you select Cell C, who at that stage had no existing agreements in place with Apple, you get the default non-crippled carrier bundle which lets you configure your own APN and enable hotspot.

I find it extremely arrogant (no surprise if you've read the Steve Jobs book) that the functionality of a device you paid for outright is ultimately determined by the carrier you choose and consequently the agreements they have (or don't have) in place with Apple.

Yip LTE was enabled on IOS6.1 beta 3 but now has been disabled on beta 4. It worked great except when connected to LTE one could not receive calls, ie. it would not fallback to 3G as supposed to. The new beta carrier firmware is Vodacom 13.2 with LTE once again disabled.

Anything yet? Is it not possible for a custom carrier setting to be put onto the iPhone 5? Like I know with my ipad some guy on the mybb server did that and now I can get personal hotspot!? Do you think this Is possible?

You will have to relax, friend. ;)

A little bit faster data is not going to be your happily ever after, I promise you that.

I am also waiting for the same thing, but there is nothing on earth that we can do about it.

It is up to Apple to make the decision - or not. Apparently they don't bother to enable LTE for countries that ordered less than 100,000 units. Also, SA is seen as bottom-feeders by the rest of the world (which we are where sales numbers are concerned), so we get placed last in the queue for LTE activations.

Ugh, what a pain in the ass! I've seen people modify there ipcc in Belgium etc, they have the same issues, if you can access the ipcc file and change 4G to true!
