Howdy

Been using ADSL for a few years now on a 10mb uncapped line.

Seriously considering Telkom uncapped LTE as it will save me about R600/month.

My ADSL as been pretty rock solid and I am loath to change by the saving is making me think twice.

Is it worth it?

I used about 260gb per month and dont have DSTV. All content is streamed from the net.

I live in Berea, East London.

Your advice

If your ADSL performance is good then why not just change to a 300gb capped account rather to save money.

LTE like other wireless solutions will slow down eventually to very slow speeds as the network gets congested,I had Telkom 3G/HSDPA here at home when it just launched and I got speed test results of 14MB/s.

A few months later my speeds slowly but surely dropped to 2MB/s.Switched to ADSL and never looked back again.

Stick to DSL perhaps get a capped account or 8 Mbps line speed. All your stream will still be okay. In that way you might save money. Fixed cable connection will always be better than wireless.

adsl hands down, lte is horrendously unreliable.

LTE with such a big cap is expensive and the telkom uncapped one gets throttled after 50GB i believe.

last month ussage. on telkom lte Hello! You have used 395447 MB of your inclusive SmartBroadband Uncapped Wireless service.

You guys see, an example, with Telkom Uncapped LTE thehuman used 395GB of data last month (I hope not since the 1st of July lol). So if you have a lot of people using similar on your local Telkom tower you might get congestion on the tower at times, just like you get with some ADSL exchanges.

There are times my capped LTE will get 40mbps on speedtest, other times it will get 4mbps, in the exact same physical spot.

With LTE Uncapped the speed on Torrents (and some other protocol) are throttled after 50GB use for the month, streaming not limited.

OP, there are distinct advantages and disadvantages.

The answer to the question is wholly dependent on your usage patterns. If you play online or stream between the hours of 6-10PM, then you should rather bite that ADSL bullet. If not, LTE is a no brainer. This is based on the current users' experiences during these peak hours. Uncapped LTE did not always degrade, congestion became problematic only after several months. What the future holds is anybody's guess. Oddly, during these peak times, DSTV streaming would buffer, but YouTube will play flawless or I can download at 20mb/s. I haven't tried other streaming services, so it could very well be just a dstv problem, for me.
Hop on over to the huge Telkom LTE thread too, and do some reading. There's a plethora of meaningful information to also help make a decision.

Also bear in mind the Telkom uncapped LTE is now R800, that R600 special is over.

My experience as well. Telkom LTE speeds above 50Mbps after 11pm, up to 7pm. Then crawling speeds 7-11pm. It's a good product for downloading (high speeds, lenient FUP therefore practically uncapped). But not so good for streaming during peak hours.
