Hi all,

Hope the mybb community can help. My mum has a new Lumia 800. Awesome phone! But it chows airtime like crazy! It's used like R100 in a week and she's only made two 1min calls. Then loaded R10 and overnight it's gone! She's currently on Cell C casual chat. All background tasks are switched off. Only using Whatsapp but very little use too. Is there some other setting to switch off for it to not use data? Please help.

Thanks

try an app to monitor usage. Not sure if there is one but chk the windows store.

or phone the cellphone network to ask if there aren't any subcription services listed on her phone number.

I would seriously PM Roquemat on this forum for assistance before doing or loading some application. It is to be remembered that this phone is linked to a "Microsoft Account" aka Windows Live aka Outlook.com (Hotmail), Calender, people(Contacts),Skydrive and Ms Messenger( The oldest IM platform), accordingly it would be beneficiall to add a 250MB data bundle to her SIM to resolve the problem. Remember this is a "Smartphone" by definition.
Edit:
Try www.wpcentral.com forums for more assistance of you wish.

I'm on my phone at the moment so not going to go into detail, but first thing you need to do is make sure it is data that is chowing her airtime.
add R10 again, then put it into battery saver mode(in settings) and leave it overnight. Then try the same again but without battery saver. If the former uses airtime still, then its almost definitely not data that is the problem and is probably some sms subscription.

If no airtime is used, but airtime is used with the latter then yeah, data is the problem.
Let me know the answer to this, then I will give you some more things to try.

P.s. Sorry about the wait, work has kept me busy lately.

Go into settings
Then immediately swipe right (away from system and into applications)
Check the background tasks, and pretty much everything else there. See what happening and what's not.

Also, disable Feedback (system menu).

There are probably a few other things I'm missing.

Will try this tonight. Thanks bud

Thanks for your reply.

I've uninstalled all those background tasks and disabled feedback. Will keep looking though.

Just an update

I've set email synch to manual and installed "Counters" from Nokia Betalabs. Great app for what I need. So airtime isn't getting chowed now. Thanks guys.

Btw how do you close apps on the Lumia 800? Hold down back arrow to see open apps. Then to close, click the open app then repeatedly press the back arrow? Or is there another way?

Thanks

That's the only way. But like with the iPhone, when an app isn't in the foreground it is "tombstoned". So it doesn't matter what you have in your app history - it wont be using power, ram, or data.
