--Give a short explanation of the problem

- Line drops randomly from time to time (tried a brand new router that did the same).
- The latency occasionally spikes up to 150+ locally and traceroutes reveal the first hop after my router to have such high latency.
- Openweb accounts not authenticating at all.
- Line is very bad at 10Mbps

--Give the first six digits of our phone number

012 644

--ADSL line speed (like 1Mbps, 4Mbps etc)

Supposed to be 10, running at 8 at the moment, occasionally have to drop down to 6Mb.

--ISP name and account type (like MWEB uncapped)

Afrihost 4Mb Uncapped, Openweb 4Mb Gamersking

--The time of day when you typically see these problems

Evenings between around 8pm to 1am.

Optional, but it will be great if you can also give the following information:

--A traceroute to Telkom.co.za

Will update my post with this tonight.

--The actual sync speed of the line
--The attenuation stats of the line

I'm on 012 664 and I've had 3 separate issues in the last 3 months.

The symptoms start in the evening (just as I get home, invariably) and last until Telkom fixes it. I can sync to the ADSL, but PPPoE never connects. When it does (normally very VERY late at night), there's a 2s (TWO SECOND!) latency to the first hop. I've seen it go up to 20s. The hilarious thing is that pings still complete! Buffering must be MASSIVE.

I don't lose pings up to 10k in size, they just take VERY long.

I'm on a 2MB account with MWEB Uncapped.

Telephone still works and attenuation to the exchange is fine. BUT, this seems to be a regular occurrence.

^Spot on. I don't really have authentication issues (except with Openweb, rest works fine) but the latency is incredible sometimes.

As promised, my traceroute and side by side ping test to 196.25.1.1 which is a SAIX hosted server in Cape Town I normally do all my local testing to. The second hop (beyond my firewall and modem) is already at 30ms and to my experience that's the sort of latency one should expect between Gauteng and Western Cape in total counting all hops.

EDIT: Checked and double checked, there was nothing apart from Chrome running that would affect my tests.

EDIT: Got a lot worse now. Pings to CT averaging at 120ms. Second hop latency at 90ms.
