In the old days (internet old days) there was a forum much like this part of myBB called the Mail & Guardian forum. It was an email list with around 200 members. I was one of them. Other members included one Christina Scott.

I suspect that some of the members of that forum are also on this one. It is with some sadness that I read today of her untimely passing in a motor vehicle collision. Despite many disagreements with her, the few times I met her and the many online interactions we had will always be remembered by myself and other members of that forum.

She will be remembered - Goodbye Christina. Hamba Kahle.

RIP Christina,

I never had the pleasure of interacting with her, but from what I do know of her she was a great great person. She will be missed by many people.

Geez, I have been a member of the M&G forum years, years back. Are they still active somewhere? I doubt it though.

Sorry to hear about Christina!

I am sorry to hear about Christina. Here is the link to the new old M&G forum , there are still a few forumites holding the light there.

Mmmm - still active hey? BRING THA NOIZE!

Glad that some of you remember her. One day, when I am old and no-one that was affected is still alive, I may just reveal what she helped me do...

Last riff for Biltong Blues?

Regrettably the forum in question appears to have crashed, hopefully not for the last time. I became aware of it in 1998 when it was hosted by the online Mail & Guardian, completely open & unmoderated with no registration required, and called Biltong Blues. Inevitably, as the number of internet users grew during the late 1990s, it became the target of trolls and spammers, not to speak of the flame wars - mostly highly entertaining to the neutral observer - that went on.

In 1999 MWeb was hosting the online M&G & one of their technicians, PeterHD, revamped the forum using open source UBB Threads. Registration and passwords were introduced & it was rebadged as the M&G Discussion Forum. Volunteer moderators attempted, with varying degrees of success, to keep the peace and fend off the trolls. Longest serving moderators were Crow and Strider. Sometimes it was hard to tell the mods and the trolls apart with Crow manifesting himself in various guises. After a row where allegations of racism were made against the mods, their role was combined into that of an eponymous Moderatrix. No one, allegedly, knew who "she" was.

In 2008 M&G Media set up its own webserver independently of its former host MWeb. The forums continued to be hosted and administered by MWeb and were not linked to the M&G who eventually demanded that the name M&G be removed from the forum. Until 2011 the forum was known as the MWeb OpenForum although not an official MWeb site. About two years ago the forum was renamed for the third time and migrated to its current host gargoyle.co.za.

Hopefully, like the Phoenix, the forum will rise again. Facebook and Twitter, in my view, can never adequately replace a traditional internet discussion forum. Perhaps SA has too small an on line population to support more than one truly universal forum like MyBB? Time will tell ...

Apparently a hack attempt corrupted the user data base. The forum could be reconstituted but current members would need to register again. Admin appears to feel that its time to call it a day. That's a pity. Where are those people now? Any of them about? Why not join this forum? MyBroadband is likely to endure and beats the heck out of 120-characters on Twitter or trying to keep up with the privacy issues on Facebook. Just a thought ... Let's hear from the M&G forum vets! :)

Very sad - we don't have too many forums that old. Hell, we've even seen some refugees pop up on Dementia lately. Godspeed M&G. May you be active in Forum Heaven sometime.
