G-d, what a pile of steaming poopie.

Anyway, I have problems with this version, and would appreciate some consensus or help :D

I have a web site that is widely used by a closed user group. The page runs perfectly in Firefox and IE 5 and below.
For the most part, it is vanilla HTML, with a PHP backend. There are splatterings of Java script, but this is used for assisting the user, and if java is disabled / does not work on the PC, the site is still usable.
The database is mySQL, and the whole thing runs on IIS 6 (for reasons I will not go into here, but suffice to say there are legacy apps not compatible with Linux running as well...).

Now, on IE6 I have the following two irritating problems:
1) Session variables appear to die - which is odd. I can only think that IE6 somehow manages to appear as a new instance to the server? In real terms, if the user is logged on, and goes to a new screen, SOMETIMES the server sends him back to the logon page, as it cannot identify the user as logged on. If the problem was server related, it would also happen with Firefox and IE 5 and below?

2) Pages with "long running" scripts simply die. These scripts run for around 20 seconds - and once again flawlessly in the other browsers.

Is it just me, or have M$ outdone themselves again?

It could maybe be the cookies being off in IE6??

i do not use cookies. Also, I would be OK with this problem if it was consistent. It is the randomness of the thing, together with the site working in all other browsers that makes me point fingers at IE6.

i have never had any such issued with IE6 and I have to use it for hours on a day. I stay logged in for days...

luckely, I do not have to run IIS... you know that apache runs on windows?

all i can suggest is to patch up IE6 and if problem persists, give apache a try.

The next step is to move from windows to linux. But, we have legacy web apps running, and have just done a major upgrade, so I will let things settle down for a bit 1st.

It could well be I have
a) a dodgy IE6
b) a dodgy win install
afterall, net 2005 trashed most of the windows settings related to framework and iis on my PC....

Have to agree with the "Go for Apache" crowd... Keep IIS running (on a different port) for the legacy stuff, but use Apache as the main server!
