I'm thinking of changing jobs and Old Mutual (in Pinelands) seems a possibility. The problem is the travelling though. Of late I have heard of several people who have complained of the traffic on the M5 from the southern suburbs to the N2 turnoff - it seems to have gotten a lot worse in the last 6 months - some taking an hour to go from Plumstead to Pinelands in the morning and afternoon. Anyone here have some views on this or know why this is?

Traffic seems to have stayed heavy this year, even after UCT has settled down. But - I dont go near the M5 anymore... but i can tell you the Kenilworth side on Rosmead / Belvedere and surroundings is bad. I have learnt various shortcuts and shortcuts on shortcuts when other people are causing congestion. Or when a burst waterpipe in Rondebosch shuts down half of cape town!

My advise is - if you are nervous of this traffic.. 1) be prepared to leave early for work... and 2) Talk to people to figure out the shortcuts to get around the nasty bits. 3) There is a nice pub @ mutual.. with tv screens... have a beer while you wait for hte traffic to subside in the afternoon :-)

If you're travelling from Plumstead it could actually be quicker to cut across to the M3 and head to Pinelands that way.

Leave earlier. I work in Century City and get onto the M5 at Ottery Road every morning at 6am. I get to work just before 6:20, jave coffee and whatnot, start at 7am, leave at 15:45 to get home by 16:10.

The M5 starts getting backed up from 6:30, so YMMV. Those hour long commutes you mentioned normally occur when leaving southern suburbs at 7am.

Thanks for the heads up. The traffic situation is definitely not what I remember it to be. I will need to be more mindful of the areas I decide to go for.

What would be great, is if I could get into PnP (Rosmead Ave) ... get to work in 5 minutes.

I live in Plumstead and work in Pinelands.
I get to work in 20 minutes or less, every morning, no matter what time I leave....

... on my Scooter

:p

Traffic in CT all over has gotten to ridiculous levels last 6 months, not just the M5. I rarely get to work in the time I used to previously...now it takes between 15 and 30mins longer to work....and 30mins longer home.

No idea WTF has changed to cause this...but got me to miffed I will be going in to work now on my motorbike as often as possible...

A motorbike is a definite possibility for me ... I'm also sick of the long trek to the CBD and the expensive parking (if you want to park close to the office).

Came here to see an M5 having issues in traffic. Realised its the road name

True ..before leaving home at 630 and n2 was flowing

now its backed up

even though i leave after 9 now there is still bumper to bumper on the n2

so OP leave earlier than 630 or after 9

Good advise. One problem is that some places have strict working times and/or don't have proper flexitime. I find it very strange why some companies still stick to the 8:00-17:00 (generalising) timeslot.

yeah if you dont have clients to service there is no need for it

A lot of companies have also still not realised the value of allowing employees to work from home.

if you are wondering why there is so much traffic you just have to look at the trains, which have been delayed and delayed and cancelled and cancelled. People are now relying on taxis and cars to get to work.
