Maanda Manyatshe resigned from his position of Managing Director at MTN SA after he became involved in a court case related to his previous job as Chief Executive at the South African Post Office (SAPO). He quit his post at the mobile telecoms operator with immediate effect, in the wake of fraud and tender procedure mismanagement allegations relating to his time at the SA Post Office.
In late September 2006, the Mail & Guardian newspaper published a story relating to the irregular awarding of a tender to refurbish branches of the Post Office during Manyatshe's time at the institution, which he headed from 1999 to 2004. The tender, of R99.5 million, was awarded to Vision Design House in 2003 but the new head of the SAPO, Khutso Mampeule, says the tendering process was irregular and claims that VDH did substandard work in refurbishing the Post Offices. Mampeule laid a complaint with the police against Manyatshe, the Post Office’s retail GM, Geoffrey Mabote, and transformation executive Francis Matabane. In his complaint, Mampeule said that while 19 bidders had initially tendered for the job, the tender process was “suddenly aborted and shortly afterwards the extraordinary step was taken of appointing VDH, which had not participated in the initial process”.
