Hey all,

I recently changed over from windows to mac, and wow what a difference....
I am still getting use to it.

I have a question to ask you fanboys (myself included) why does it use so much data on the network?

Just in idle for about 8 hours it uses 100-150 mb!

Why is it doing that?

Can I prevent it from chowing my bandwidth?

Thanks,
Stuart

Find and install LittleSnitch

It will tell you who and what is using the network and why - sounds excessive that amount of data...

Disable automatic Software Update too wherever it may be set.

Thanks, but that is one hell of an expensive app.

my mac came standard with the firewall turned off, it should be on right?

Using this mac is making my brain hurt at times so any help would be appreciated and i thank you for your input but that app is too costly.

Trial is 3 hour demo. It'll give you an idea of the culprit(s). Give it a bash and at least isolate the bandwidth eaters. Report back if it found anything.

Is your system software fully up to date? Also check your software update preferences if it is set to automatically download the latest updates.

Other than that, what applications are you running when you get this data usage?

If you're on ML, the delta updates should also help out... My 12B19 build update was a whole 7 meg download.

I have reviewed and changed auto update functionalities and stopped auto app update.
It still seems to be chowing data not at the previous pace but still rapidly.

Im going to try that little snitch app.

one question... Should my macs firewall be on?

my setup is the mac connected to my time capsule via straight cable, then the time capsule is connected to my TP-link 3G router via cable.

I leave the firewall on. Related and one other thing you should check 'tho... In Safari Preferences, General tab... Uncheck "Open safe files after downloading", then just make sure you don't install random apps you haven't specifically downloaded. Oh, and Java and Flash have been the main culprits for malware propagation on Macs in the past... Just saying.
