I think if he's upgrading his current desktop (pc) then going the intel route might be a better idea. It's not good for those windozers to go cold turkey

This is also true. I have heard it can be painful. Intel seems they way to go...

Went to the shop to check out the Mini again and I liked what i saw. Sad that it doesn't come with anything, like a keyboard or mouse but that is not the end of the world. However, why is there such a big price difference between the entry level one :

The RAM must have set you back!
Got it from the states so it wasnt too bad. Remember the mini comes with 512 to start but its 2x 256 so if you want to upgrade you might end up chucking those as apple recommends matched pairs.

Yuck! Did you run it for a while with only 512MB? Was it enough? Not really hey?
I had the ram before I even had the mini but thats another story. Anyway the first thing I did was install the ram and wasnt that an experience. I've still got my putty knife for future upgrades.

The fact that it is 2 x 256MB is not the most practical thing they could have done either. Oh well. Will have to sort that out at a later stage, like when I have some money to buy the thing in the first place

I can see why they did it - the cpu apparently benefits from a matched pair of ram and the machine is an entry level model so 512 might be sufficient for a lot of people.
Cant say I've ever regretted sticking the extra in there though

Yeah i suppose. 512 is not gonna cut it for me though I don't think which will mean quite a costly upgrade

As I can imagine. My gf is gonna get a Macbook. WIll the 1GB RAM it comes with suffice for that then do you think?

I cracked open the mini the other day to get rid of dust etc, and I found that a metal egg lifter did the job just fine... no scratches suffered.
1GB for day to day stuff on a macbook should be fine, I wouldn't recommend anyone stick with 512MB unless ur only word processing and enjoy the sight of the spinning beach ball of death.
BTW the RAM is from when I upgraded my intel mini.

Probably wouldnt do you much good - the macbook also comes with ram in matched pairs. 2x 256 for the 1.83 model and 2x 512 for the 2ghz.Aha. Cool then.

And are there only two slots then I take it?
