Has anybody tried to install Mac OSX Maverick on a normal PC/ Laptop? I downloaded all the files and want to experiment on my Compaq laptop. Any tips from those who have tried?

There is a website out there that will give you a walk through. Not sure if I can name it on here. You can do a Google search and I am sure the site will come up. It rhymes with Macintosh. If you can't find it then pm me for the site.

It's a mission on laptops, there are some good guides on TonyMacx and osx86 IIRC

Drivers can be a pain in the ass, sometimes multibeast doesn't have the correct version

But it's a fun undertaking nonetheless so have fun!

I would not recommend it, best to get a second hand mac if you really want to enjoy OSX at cheap price.

You can build a desktop that will give u the same performance as a real mac at a quarter of the price. Laptops are difficult though

tonymac and get your hardware details there. and look at the guides. follow guides to the T!

running own hackintosh at moment and loving it :) super smooth etc.

RDP if need to do something windows based no need for dualboot/parallels.

If need some help DM me and ill see if I could help you.

Works, but you need specific hardware.

What video card does your Compaq laptop have?
What CPU (Intel is best).
What wifi chipset?
etc.

Its easy if you have the right hardware. If you don't then its a pain and you'll probably be better off swapping out what you can for something compatible. (eg wifi cards).

This. Just get a Mac if you want a Mac.

I've been down the Hackintosh route, and it's never the same. It's just stupid.

Not always.

I made myself 3 hackintoshs - 1x dual xeon 6 core, and 2x dual xeon 4 core with 64- 128G ram for fun a while ago.
They're a tad faster than my Mac Pro for work stuff.

Worked out at between 3000-5000rmb (multiply by 1.7 for rands) a pop.

I need a retina display, the macbook pro comes with it and is a great piece of hadware.
Building a Super fast PC for about the same price of a retina macbook pro = priceless

Macbook pro is a different beast than a Mac Pro. For one, its a laptop, not a desktop.

Mac Pro's are the desktops. These days, its a bit of a toss up between the higher level iMac i7's and the Mac Pro's for a number of things.

As a Mac Pro in the same spec as I built would be roughly 10x more expensive, I think I did ok. Was worth the effort for me.
I do have a slightly higher resolution screen on my Mac Pro than the Macbook Retina though. 4k ;)

I think I need to bring some more of my Mac's home to South Africa, pricing here is extortionate, sigh.

The mac pro is pretty competitively priced and sometimes cheaper than a DIY solution.

But yea, in SA we're getting ripped as usual.

Actually our Mac prices are on par, if not cheaper ;)

A quad-core Mac Pro in the UK is £2,499.00 (R46,231 excl. import duties). Locally, the same machine costs R39,999.

That's quite a bit cheaper locally.

No, they're really not pricewise.

I'm in China some of the year, pricing is close to US pricing.
Plus, I already have a bunch of equipment, I just need to bring it back (more of it comes back each trip!).
