I'm looking for a 3G usb modem for my wife to use on her Macbook...any suggestions and related costs for the device?

I use a Vodacom 3G modem. It costs around R250 for 500GB of data per month (you can buy more if you run out). I think they've recently launched some more attractive deals.

It works well. The only problem I ran into was installing the Mac software, but hopefully this is no longer an issue. (I had to show the package contents and use the files inside to install).

+1 For the Vodacom "Vodaphone" branded on. It's a ZTE, works in OSX, and guess what? It's not network locked. Works a treat with my 3.co.uk sim over here.

One word of warning though: Do not, under any circumstances, install the software that comes on the modem. Every time I've made that mistake, it made a mess on my system. It's a 32 bit Mac Classic app that's been badly ported to OSX. It broke my 32bit environment to the point where no other 32bit app would work properly. Just don't do it. Download the Vodafone dialer here - it contains the dialer settings for just about every mobile network you might want to connect to.

I have the K3765 model, purchased from a Vodacom store on pre-paid in December 2009.

Err, please tell me where you buy your data from.... thanks :)

I have a Vodafone MC950D, was a bit of a mission installing as the vodafone software doesnt function on SL, but it works thru OS X and does the job.

This K3765 is available at Game, HiFi, Incredible, all over for R500 cash and then go prepaid - your wallet will thank you within 2 months...

At R500 I wonder if it's network locked? My network-free one was R2000 odd at the Voda shop.

nah, a friend of mine just bought one from a vodashop for 400 bucks on a special so i think they must be getting new stock or something. trick is its probably only 7.2mbps enabled but i mean we will probably never get anything faster than that here any time soon anyways...

and i think it was supposed to be 500megs?

You can get them on bidorbuy for like R400 too, so don't spend too much! Many 3G cellphones can tether to your PC as well and act as a modem so that's also an option.

I still use my Huawei E220 with my Macbook. I use the Vodaphone software, found at http://www.business.vodafone.com/si...40_software/software/10_latest/p_software.jsp with the E220, currently version 4.01.11.0 Have not had any issues on the Macbook with it and I am running SL 10.6.4. The E220 is not the latest USB modem, I upgraded the firmware to allow for 7.2 Mbps but it works well for e-mail and surfing.

I use a Huawei E960 bought at Telkom shop for R800, it has wifi, 4 ethernet ports & usb, I use 3 different prepaid sim cards (Voda, Mtn & Cell C). Downloaded app from huawei site.
