What would be the best/quickest/cheapest way to get the 13" 256GB model, but with 4GB RAM?

Get someone over the water to buy and ship you one. It's going to cost about $1699 (R11 893 @ R7/$) for the 1.83Ghz model and $1799 (R12 593) for the 2.13Ghz version though. You could probably save $100 or so by shopping around a bit, getting education discount etc.

That's a heck of a lot cheaper than you'll be paying here.

Mmmm, don't really know anyone in the US, but I see our prices are not that much higher than Aus ... The 13" 256GB sells for R14999 here and for AUD1949 (R13448) in Aus ... since I get 10% discount at the iStores on my Discovery CredCard ... it is R13500. I think I'll probably just go for that ... they say the special order for 4GB RAM will take at least 6 weeks.

2GB will probably be alright as well ... swapping will at least happen to a really fast SSD.

Bear in mind that the 10% discount is limited to R10k at any one store, and can only comprise a maximum of 1/3 of your total spend. That means that if you'll have to spend R20k elsewhere in order to qualify for the maximum R1k off. At least that's the case if your Discovery card is the same as mine :)

Where did you find someone actually willing to do this for you? I called Core and asked them how to get a BTO model, and they told me to configure it on the US Apple Store, take a screenshot of it and email it to them for a quote. Not only did they say it would take 8-10 weeks but I never did hear back from them.

Mmmm, knew about the 30% limit at one store, that one is not a problem ... but completely forgot about that overall R10 000 limit ... ok, so the discount will effectively be around R800 (usually save about R200 a month at other stores in any case).

OK, well then I should maybe just get Discovery to load the new Macbook Air's on their Vitality shop ... have about R9500 woth of Discovery Miles that I need to spend on something in any case.

Phoned the iStore at Vodaworld, the will "get" me a quote ... that part is gonna take 2 to 3 days. They'll mail it to me on Moday or Tuesday, I'm not gonna hold my breath though. ... if I accept it, I'll have to pay upfront and then wait at least 6 weeks.

Seeing as the base price is R14 999 for the 13" 256GB, you're looking at about R15 999 for a 4MB version. Compared to about R12 000 in the US is a big difference.

Fair enough, but if they only klap me for the VAT it is already R13680 .... and then shipping etc.

I know Apple's portable devices carry an international warranty, but CORE will just give you a little bit extra crap if they did not bring it in.

I've been thinking about getting one of these for a couple of weeks and decided to go with the MacBook Pro instead. It just seems far more value for money, with the option to upgrade both RAM and SSD later. MacBook Air has no upgrade options later.

If my brother brings one across from Hong Kong on his next visit it should cost me about R7500 for the Pro.
