In your head...
Does anyone else have issues where their track pad becomes unresponsive? Rebooting always fixes it but it's really annoying when it happens during presentations where I can't just hang up on the video call to reboot this damn thing. I'm about to toss it out the window.

Backup, return it and ask for a refund.

You paid over R25k for that right?

Base model M1, trackpad behaving itself.

Happens on my 2019 Intel MacBook Pro. Usually after the screen goes to sleep and after you press a key to wake up, the trackpad is dead. Only a hard reboot fixes it.

It's most likely a software issue. My Intel MacBook Pro only recently started doing it, so unlikely a hardware issue.

Will probably be patched soon enough.

I hope so. It's driving me absolutely bonkers. I'll be doing a presentation in Zoom and bam unresponsive. So far it seems to happen mostly in PowerPoint, but I had it do the same in Visual Studio Code once or twice. I've only had it for about a week and iStore says they seem to be getting a few calls about it and they are hoping an update will be sent out soon.

That could be your problem. Unless the app is specifically written for the M1 ARM architecture, it will run through legacy emulation via Rosetta.

The latest update to MS Office introduces direct support for Apple's M1 architecture, so maybe check to see if PowerPoint is up-to-date?

It's fully updated. I ran all software updates as I got it, installed Office on Wednesday last week direct from the Office site using my Office 365 subscription and checked all updates over the weekend as I had my first issues during my presentations on Thursday and Friday. Over the weekend it froze while using Visual Studio Code, but a hard reboot wasn't an issue then. Then it did the same thing during a presentation today. I just ordered a Bluetooth mouse off TakeAlot now to help me get through work until they finally patch the issue.

Pity you cant load Windows via bootcamp on it then you could tell if its HW or SW.

The mouse you bought, does it have an receiver? Would be a shame if it came with a Type A receiver and you dont have an adapter.

All MacBooks come with built-in bluetooth. You don't need a USB dongle.

Of course but if the mouse has a receiver that you plug in, it ain't gonna work without it.

You're confusing old school 2.4GHz RF "wireless" mice with Bluetooth mice. They're two different standards.

Bluetooth is a global standard, so any Bluetooth mouse will work with any Bluetooth enabled PC. You don't need a dongle. The only reason a Bluetooth mouse might include a dongle is if your machine does not support Bluetooth nativey.

A wireless mouse comes in two varieties: radio-frequency (RF) and Bluetooth. The basic difference between the two is that RF mice need a USB dongle to connect, while a Bluetooth mouse uses a transmitter that communicates and connects with the Bluetooth receiver built into your computer.

What macOS version? Update to latest Big Sur, it fixed many of the launch problems I had on my M1
