I switched on my MacBook Air this morning and it refused to connect to WiFi and generally became unresponsive so I had to hold down the power button to restart it. After putting my password the screen went blank with nothing showing but I can move the mouse around but that's all I can do. When I'm on the Login screen I can see the battery, time and WiFi icons but when I enter my password and login they disappear and the screen just turns blank. The machine is running on Maverick and has never been dropped or subjected to shock of any kind. Has this happened to anyone before and should I be worried?

Drop/Shock isn't so much an issue with the Macbook's these days - they all have SSD's.

Its really only Hard Disks that you need to worry about that (unless you drop the laptop hard enough to crack the screen or similar!).

I'd try boot into your recovery usb that came with the machine, and do a disk check.
Don't do a repair just yet though. First do a disk check. If it finds issues, suggest plug in a usb disk, and copy off important data *before* you do the repair.

Once you're safe, then do a disk repair. If that doesn't work, then reformat, and reinstall Mavericks.

If you're in Cape Town and need assistance with that, PM me.
