This is the problem I have...
http://www.appledefects.com/images/macbookcrack1.jpg
mine has not broken off yet but it has started to crack already, I'm really disappointed in Apple about this considering that I could have bought a much more rugged laptop for the same price.

Who else is having this problem and how did you get it fixed?

Since I imported mine I doubt I can just walk into a mac shop and demand it be replaced :(

Not sure if the crack itself is covered (how old is it?) but all their portables come with a worldwide warranty.

It is a recognised flaw and you just call the Core workshop (011 566 0509/3/1) and tell them that it has cracked. Ask them to call you when they get the part in and you bring your machine down. It may take a day or so to do the repair because you have to get in the queue.

Mine is out of warrantee and they are still fixing it. I sent a mail to Apple international and they told me that they would continue to fix it.

It is a flaw that is happenning with some Macbooks and I think it depends more on the person than the machine, like where you put your wrist.

PM me if you want more info.

Okay thanks, I'll look into this..
Since yours is out of warranty are you paying for it to be fixed?

I could import the part for under R2000 and fix it myself though.

No I am not paying for it. This has happened multiple times to my machine and I got a verbal assurance from the guy in charge of warantee repairs that they would continue to repair it if it recurred.

I might get slightly better service because I am a journalist but you should demand nothing less.

Keep in mind at six months old yours isnt out of warranty so importing and fixing it yourself will probably void it.

hahahhaahahhaha, a day or so for core to repair something......not in this lifetime....not ever.....be prepared for between a week and 2 months

Yeah, I realize this but I thought that if this crack was not covered then I'll have to do it myself, luckily that's not the case.

Depending on how severe the crack was I would probably still have waited before voiding my warranty until it had expired.

I've been waiting for months now to swap my hdd for a bigger faster one for the very same reason. :)

Me too, I was eyeing a new HDD but don't want to void my warranty just yet ;)

Mine also started cracking so i just used some superglue to fix it. Maybe i should also get it repaired ;-)

You're in luck - iirc with a macbook that is classified as user serviceable so you wont void it. Changing the hdd on a MBP is a whole different ballgame. :o

LOL, I forgot about that... Gonna start upgrading soon ;)

Looks like I might be without my macbook for more than a week if I decide to send it for repairs... I cant afford that so I used the apple stickers that came with my Macbook and stuck it over the cracks for now as a quick fix, it looks kinda cool too ;)
