Ive got an early 2009 unibody macbook that ive really enjoyed over the last twenty months or so...
but when i tried turning it on yesterday it wouldnt go on......the screen stays black, there is no start-up sound and only the sleep light in front stays on....i can hear the harddrive spinning though...
by all accounts from what ive read it sounds like a logicboard failure...
does anybody have any experience with this and more or less what does a repair cost?
would a repair even be feasible...or should i start shopping around for a replacement....
sorry for all the questions but im a little p1ssed off....................
the machine performed flawlessly until yesterday so there were no warning signs or anything....
thanks for help...

Sounds just like mine (early 2008 or late 2007, I can never remember) went. In my case I was lucky, my model has a known flaw with the nVidia chip. I took it to the Apple Store (UK) and they swapped out the logic bord free of charge, no questions asked. This was only a few months ago, so it was well out of warranty.

yeah ... i read about that but wasnt that only for macbook pros?

Yes, it was specific to one release of one model. I just mentioned it because the symptoms was the same.

ok....thanks for that...we a long way off from that kind of service here though......
hopefully it can still be fixed without killing the finances....

It's a common problem with Macbooks and if your is still a 2009 model, it should be covered by Apple. Take it to Digicape and they will organise a repair free of charge. If for some reason it's not covered, DO NOT pay the rip-off repair cost at Digicape. I had my 2005 macbook pro repaired by a small shop in Cape Town for R750. Phone Dennis on 021 510 5517. Digicape quoted me over R6000.

thanks for response....ive recently moved to pe from cape town...
i received the following quotation this morning from the apple representative in pe
exchange logic board for macbook R5865
labour R495
courier R375
which brings you to a grand total of R6735
I could buy the new air for R9k or macbook for R10k
so this repair does not make any sense

it is a 2009 model......why do you think digicape will organise a free repair as its out of warranty.........
ill contact dennis as well and get a quote from him
many thanks

When I took my MBP to Digicape they told me that certain models qualify for free repair, covered by Apple, even if outside warrantee period because the the logic board problems are due to Macbooks shipping with a faulty component. They actualy don't repair the logic board but replace it with new one. I've heard of a few other people who got a free replacement, not just abroad, but also in SA.
I left my MBP with Digicape and after they did some checks they came back and said mine unfortunately did not qualify, because it was just too old. I'm sure 2009 will not be a problem though.
I would ask your Apple representative to investigate this otherwise take it somewhere else. Possibly ship it to Digicape?
Dennis charges a flat fee of R750 for logic board repairs. That's what he quoted me before hand and that's what he charged me after spending a few weeks repairing it.

thanks i spoke to dennis.....he said between 1 and 1,5k......still a bargain though if he manages to fix it..
ill give digicape a call based on what u said
thanks mate

In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within two years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty.

Shipping faulty products…replacing few and denying others….how unethical…that should be held responsible for this? Very unfair and illogical!
