A friend recently gave me his old macbook so I could use the parts to franken-mac a laptop for the kids out of old macbooks. The only thing that seems wrong with his however is that it won't charge the battery. I've reset the power management and even swapped in another magsafe board but it's still showing the battery icon with the x in it.

Any ideas?

Now you know why he gave it to you ;)
I knew from the outset that it only worked on power supply - I was just wondering if there were things I should check that he might have missed. Ideally I'd like to repurpose his logic board (C2D vs my Core duo) but that's where I think the problem lies.

Have you checked the battery in system profiler? Go to power and see the battery condition ... if it is being recognised at all.

My old Macbook battery had it's day and I got the same x in the battery indicator.

Brand new battery - still has the plastic on it so I scored there too :)

I didn't see that it was you bwana ... thought you were a mac pro and should be giving us the answers ...
I was just asking for possibilities. :)

The trackpad was gone on mine so for now I've just swapping keyboards.

It would have been nice if I could have fixed the newer one as my existing MB won't support Lion. My black MB is now sporting a stylish white keyboard and battery :)

Thanks ponder. I've tried most of the suggested repairs with the exception of the battery connector which I'll try later. Right now the kids are playing with their new MacBook Zebra. :)
