Hi Guys,

I need help with 2 things - firstly i've been charging this unit of my Macbook charger (60w). It's worked fine until today, the unit is dead and charger just displays a green light when its clearly not charged or charging. The charger isn't an issue (other than the lower power) as it still powers and charges my Macbook.

Any tips on how to troubleshoot. I've done the obvious remove battery etc, not working.

I'd like to buy a charger for this unit its a core2duo 3.1 Macbook Pro. Will any 85w charger work?

I mainly see two models - MacBook Pro MagSafe A1175 and MacBook Pro MagSafe A1172 - what arer the differences? I don't want to order something and it won't work.

Thanks and Regards,
J

What size screen? 13" uses 60W and 15+ use 85W. And it is best to have the correct wattage. If you say the charger is not an issue, why do you need a new one? Maybe go to one of the many apple dealers in Cape Town and plug into their charger first, before buying, to ensure it is the charger. I am sure they will cooperate if they know a sale is possible.

If the voltages & connector are the same then the 85W will work fine on both. The laptop will only draw the power it needs. The 85W will be stressed less as it supplying less power than it's maximum compared to a 65W working at it's max.

15" - Macbook Pro 3.1 (2007 model sometime). I need the 85w charger as the 60w charger I have for my Macbook isn't cutting it (it was working until the MBP drained completely and now I don't think its strong enough to charge it or its the fact that its a dodgy generic and the MBP has chosen to ignore it now). I'm going to test a friends 2010 model MBP 85watt charger and see.

Can I use any 85w charger? e.g. theres the old t shape (which I should need) or the new L shape charger (will the new model work - i've used an L shape on my Macbook (not the pro) and it worked fine. Any disadvantages of getting the newer charger?

There was a firmware update that made the L-shape work with older machines.

Thanks. So is this updated included in the OS updates or do I need to flash the bios on the machine? How would one achieve this?

Thanks and Regards,

This I know, but the OP was using the 60 without specifying which machine he had, hence my questions. The idea here was to get as much info as possible before suggesting the buy-the-best solution.

OP: I have a T and L and both work just fine.
