MacBook Pro. Charging port " exploded"

My Daughter plugged in her Macbook pro to charge and there was a big bang, sparks and house power tripped, leaving a blackened charing port and burnt charger.

What could cause this, there should not be that high a voltage at the charging port.
Or could this be from a voltage spike?IMG_6145.JPGIMG_6146.JPG

The Macbook Charger's cable near the end that connects to the laptop is notorious bad quality and over time after regular use the cable becomes some bad that the insulation wears out and the wires can touch.

That's what a switching mode power supply sometimes does when it dies. What caused it to die could be many things, a short as mentioned or even a failure of a component inside the charger.

It's why you should never skimp on the PSU in PC builds incidentally.

Thanks. Was worried as have 2 newer MacBooks and wary of power surges
Would this mean a new machine? Or is it repairable?

What can happen is the magnetic bit attracts things like staples, and you get a short. That shouldn't lead to burnt connectors though.

Either way, I'd raise a ticket with Apple (*not* Core), and get them to talk to Core about replacement PSU or Macbook (one or both depending whats fried).

Things like that are things they will fix for you if you make a little bit of noise, as it looks bad for them.

Is it an original charger or a fake one?

Original Charger.
She had been having issues of the laptop running so hot it would burn her leg.
Will have her take it to US apple store next week and see what they say

Mine exploded too and took it to the iStore, they replace the charging board and the logic board! Thank god it was under warranty. If yours is under warranty they will fix it I'm sure. If not, pray the logic board is not affected.
