My Aunt is coming to visit in December from America in and I really want her to bring me a Macbook Pro as I worked out I can save a heck of a lot of money.

Is this an ok way to purchase one? Will I have no warranty?

I appreciate your views.

As far as I know you will have no warranty. Core won't repair a thing if you didn't buy it from them, maybe that has changed?
I bought a MacBook Pro about 3 years ago, and it is awesome! Best computer I ever bought, by far.

Apple's notebook computers are covered by a worldwide guarantee. So they are covered by Apple no matter where in the world you use them. However this is Core we are talking about and and I have heard stories of them refusing to honour the guantee if you cant provide proof that you paid import duties when it was brought into the country.

Only really counts if we had real Apple stores here...

Core will honour the warranty agreement as long as you have proof of paying all the applicable taxes and fees associated with importing.

Exactly, you got to jump through a whole lot of hoops...

If core ask for the proof of importation then you just get really angry and tell them you are here on business and you need the your computer fixed yesterday. Their global warantee caters for travel according totheir site:
perfect whether you work at a desk or travel with your Mac

It defiantly counts if the OP is buying the macbook from the states.

Ok that sounds good. My Aunt will bring it in and should I ask her to declare it so that I can get the warranty if it breaks? Or should I take the chance and if it breaks I can always send it back to America?

If I was in your situation I wouldn't declare it. Core cannot refuse to fix your laptop, if they did then you call apple and tell them their warranty is BS and they must get it fixed.

Sweet thanks guys.

I'm going to go for the 15" i7 2.66ghz model, is that a good option?

I've never been asked to provide anything other than proof of purchase on imported products.

That is the one I bought 3 months ago while I was in the USA - FANTASTIC, can't beat it. Don't declare, these are good machines, and I doubt you will have any problems with it, if you look after it properly. My Core i7 15" is flying, best laptop computer I have ever owned - and I have owned many. Enjoy it

Oh, while you are at it, and if your aunt is generous, get her to bring you a 64GB 3G iPad - if she can get one. I believe they can deliver within 24 hrs now - when I was there the wait was about 3 weeks

I bought a MacBook Pro about a month ago, best computer I've ever owned. Fast as hell and "it just works" :D

LOL I am buying the Laptop with my own money. :)

It is like a combo 21st birthday type thing. My mom said if I can save half she will pay the rest.

It's gonna cost me $2349.00
That's with adding the faster 7200 rpm drive and the higher resolution display.

So I need to save around R8000.00

The extra 4GB of RAM for $400.00 seems a bit excessive? Can I add that on by myself?

Don't worry about the faster drive or ram, apple are just smoking you with the extra charge. Do it yourself after. When I bought my macbook in 2008 I ordered a bigger drive and 4Gb of ram from www.macsales.com and installed them myself for less than half of what apple were asking.

My Macbook is an import btw, never bothered taking it to core yet even though I should, DVD drive is fsked. 3 years old now and still running after a nice upgrade. I can fix the drive myself though if I had the parts...

Regarding ram and drive, I used standard laptop parts for my upgrade, if specs are same it will work.

Ja, I got the one with the high resolution screen too. I didn't get the extra RAM memory, it seemed a bit pricey, and I didn't think I would need it. I think I paid around $ 2400.00 for mine, something like that, can't remember - bought it at an Apple store in one of the suburbs of Chicago. One thing I miss from my 2 year old MBP is the silver/aluminium keys - I think they look much better than these black keys on the new one. If there was an option to get the aluminium keys, I would have got it.....maybe I can still buy as aftermarket - Im sure Apple must sell them as spares for the older MBP
